Presentation:
version 2000

Presentatie:
versie 2000.

Number of versions: 8

Edition: January 26, 2002

With thanks to Nikos Zavrides-Pafos for his explanations of both inland editions.

As far as known there never has been issued by Waddington-UK, nor by Parker Brothers/Hasbro-USA any socalled"authorized" edition of this island.
In the eighties however the company J.J.Toys Ltd. (later: Iacovos) in Limassol  issued a few editions in which the properties not only consist of large cities but particularly of historical cities, spots and monuments, anticlockwise distributed over the game board from the very north point (Cape Apostolos  Andreas) following the coastline.
Besides many Greek editions are available on the island.

From EKKINISI (= Start) onwards the spaces of the Cyprus-editions are:

1st side: Apostolos Andreas (monastery) - Kitrines Kartes (= yellow card) - Rizokarpaso (village) - Foros Eisodimatos (= Income Tax) - Stathmos Anefodiasmou Kantaras (= Filling station at Kantaras, a Byzantine fort) - Ajios Ilarion (Byzantine fort) - Kokkines Kartes (= red star card) - Bellapais (Roman monastery) - Keryneia (city) - Fylaki (= Jail)
2nd side: Soli (
historic monument) - C.Y.T.A. (Cyprian Telecommunication Authority) - Vouni (village) - Morfou (small city) - Stathmos Anefodiasmou Polis Chrysochou (= Filling station at Polis/Chrysochou) - Polis Chrysochou (small city) - Kitrines Kartes (= yellow card) - Loutra tis Afroditis (small lake, dedicated to the goddes of love Aphrodite) - Petra tou Romiou (2 rocks along the coast) - Choros Stathmeseos (= Free Parking)
3rd side: Paphos (city) - Kokkines Kartes (= red star card) - Kourion (ancient theatre of the Roman period) - Lemesos (= Limassol) - Stathmos Anefodiasmou Skarinou (= Filling station at Skarinou) - Chirokitia (neolithic village) - Kalavasos (village) - Archi Ilectrismou (= Electric Works of the island) - Larnaka (city) - Pigeni sti Fylaki (= Go to Jail)
4th side: Salamina (
historic city) - Egkomi (village) - Kitrines Kartes (= yellow card) - Ammochostos (= Famagusta) - Stathmos Anefodiasmou Lysis (= Filling station at Lysis) - Kokkines Kartes (= red star card) - Tamasos (historic village) - black star (without the mention of any payment obligation) and Lefkosia (= Nicosia, the capital).

The Greek Monopoly of about 1985.Edition: The Greek Monopoly
Publisher: Inland Greek make, Remoundo or EPA? - after 1985?
Dimensions of the box: 25.5 x 50 cm
The game:
Presumably making Monopoly games in Greece started in the period between 1970 and 1990, which look like more or less those of Parker Brothers. However, there is no reference on any set to any patent date, nor is the maker of the set mentioned!

So it is obvious that this game has to resemble the standard American and European sets of the seventies, i.e. the game board is shown in a green and blue square, with the red MONOPOLY bar on the right. Under that also the "logo of Uncle Pennybags between 2 engines" is printed but with the distinction that Uncle is not in a red square and without a $- or £-sign! The game board shown (with GO) is an illustration of the set "NEW MONOPOLY, SUPER GREEK EDITION", issued by REMOUNDO!

As soon as you open the box however, you'll see the big difference! The empty innerbox contains, loose spread:

A soft game board the indistinct fold of it is parallel to side one, going right across the word MONOPOLY written in Greek characters.
The title deeds are printed on two slips of soft carton and have to be cut out.
The same for the yellow Chance- and red Community Chest cards, which however are not stated as such! They do have exactly the same funny illustrations as the American cards!
The money consits of only red banknotes (with engine and house) with denominations of resp.: 100 - 500 - 1000 - 2000 - 5000 - 10.000 and 50.000 Drachmes. They have to be cut out as well.
The 6 tokens are plastic "clowns caps".
There is but one little die of 7 x 7 mm with this game!
The 16 houses and 6 hotels are all of green plastic! They both have chimneys.
The instructions are printed on the inside of the lid.

The game board differs in many ways from the one of the Waddingtons edition, like:

The streets are not exclusively of Athens but of Thessaloniki as well. They are also equal to those of "New Super Monopoly", "New Monopoly, Super Greek Edition" and others!
The engines on the squares of the stations are also pointing to the right but they have the colors yellow - red - black.
There is no coil in the lamp of Electric Company and the tap of Water Works is different as well.
In Jail sits a frightened looking and his nails biting black haired man!
The Free Parking space is illustrated with a more modern car.
The policeman who direct you to Jail is wearing a cape and has no whistle!

The price of this set amounted to C£ 2.- (= € 3.54) at Cyprus in November 1995.

New Super Monopoly, Greek edition of about 1985.Edition: New Super Monopoly
Publisher: Remoundo - after 1985?
Dimensions of the box: 35.6 x 50.4 cm
The game:
Because of the fact that the picture of the board on the cover is exactly the same as of the "New Monopoly, Super Greek Edition" set the not mentioned publisher has to be Remoundo. Furthermore a link that most probably not exsist is made to Parker Brothers by Uncle Pennybags appearing from the O.

It is remarkable that the board inside the box, viz. that of the
"The Greek Monopoly" set
(so with the Greek word for GO and the Chance-space close to Go), differs from that shown on the lid!
In the centre of the light green playfield stays MONOPOLY in Greek.
Also the Chance- and Community Chest cards, the property deeds and banknotes are exactly the same and have to be cut loose.
The locomotives on the station spaces are of the Waddingtons model (and pointing to the right) but each one has a different color!
The 6 tokens are plastic pawns.
There is here also but one little die of 9 x 9 x 9 mm!
The 16 houses are red (!) and the 6 hotels are of green plastic! They have no chimneys.
The instructions are printed on the inside of the cover.

The price of this set amounted to C£ 3.- (= US$ 6.-) in November 1995 at Cyprus.

New Monopoly, Super Greek Edition of about 1985.Edition: New Monopoly, Super Greek Edition
Publisher: Remoundo - after 1985?
Dimensions of the box: 35.6 x 50.4 cm
The game:
This also far overdone large box now does contain the game board shown on the lid, so with:

GO instead of AFETERIA.
the spaces for the Chance- and Community cards in the
other corners.
the black Parker Brothers locomotive on the station fields.
the Parker Brothers convict, red car on "Free Parking" and policeman with whistle!

The game board however is still of soft cardboard and the fold is parallel to the first side again. The dark green midfield shows MONOPOLY, so not in Greek characters.
The 6 tokens are plastic pawns.
There is no die with this set, but an arrow that has to be rotated over a disc numbered from 1 to 6!
The 16 houses are blue grey and the 12 equally sized (!) hotels are of pink plastic! They both do have chimneys.
The instructions are printed on the inside of the cover.

The price of this set amounted to C£ 3.- (=  € 5.45) in November 1995 at Cyprus.

Monopoly with cities and villages of Cyprus.Edition: The Cyprus Monopoly
Publisher: J.J.Toys Ltd.- (Tel.051-32831) - 1987
Dimensions of the game board: 25.7 x 50.4 cm
The game:
The tel.numbers of Cyprus have been chanced after 1987 from 4  into 5 figures, reason why I've dated the issue of this edition somewhat later than the regular one.

This set is indeed somewhat simpler of finish than the Deluxe edition, mainly because nor the red lid, nor the centre field of the game board shows a picture of the island. The dark green underground of the board also seemed gloomy.
The innerside of the lid says:"Printed by: D.Couvas & Sons Ltd. Limassol Cyprus". The red lid shows the game board printed on a number of colored fields, what makes thinking of the presentation on the white Parker Brothers boxes of the seventies. Under the word MONOPOLY is the same classic car as is on the 4 (petrol) stations of the game board.

Striking of this game board is that:

The word MONOPOLY is in white characters diagonal over the game
board's midfield.

The question mark on the Chance-spaces is a kind of upside down ! and the concerning cards are only indicated as red cards (= Kokkines Kartes). As in the Parker Brothers editions they are situated next to Start.

The Community Chest cards are only reffered to as yellow cards (= Kitrines Kartes) and are marked as a 5-point yellow star.

On the Start field nothing is mentioned about a salary.

The youthful rascal in the Jail is behind 3 bars.

The petrol stations are illustrated with a classic car.

The Electric Company field is replaced by the Cyprian Telecommunication Authority, whereas the Water Works space is here used for the island's Electric Company.

The policeman with his whistle, who send you to the Jail is in a plain purple field.

The property deeds with red back, as well as the yellow and red cards are put into the box still being on large sheets so they have to be torn loose before use.

The banknotes are of very simple design showing a somewhat indistinct £-symbol. They are printed on white paper and the 7 denominations are: £1 - £5 - £10 - £20 - £50 - £100 and £500.

The plastic houses are orange-red and the slightly larger hotels purple-red.

The game is apparently for a maximum of 4 players, because there are only 4 hollow, plastic pawns.

The 2 minuscule dice are white with black pips.

The price of this set amounted to C£ 2.- (= € 3.54) in November 1996.

Monopolio a Greek edition also available at Cyprus.Edition: Monopolio (in Greek characters) - orange box,
              without reference

Publisher: Remoundo - ±1990
Dimensions of the box: 26.0 x 50.4 cm
The game:
This game of inland make is going to look more like a Parker Brothers issue because:

A part of the board around Go with 2 dice is shown on the lid.
The innerbox is containg a white plastic insert with 7 holes for
the banker.
The game board is of strong cardboard with its fold vertical to
the first side. The streets still are of both Athens and Tessaloniki and the engines on the stations are of the Waddingtons model, however in various colors. Again the 3 corners are with "nail biting rascal", "modern car" and "cape wearing policeman". The folded board rests on the edges of the innerbox.
There are "real" property deeds now, dim. 59 x 89 mm.
Also the Entoli- (= Order) and Apofasi- (= Decision) cards do not need to be cut out. However it is strange that the back of both cards is green! The texts are no longer illustrated.
The banknotes (dim. 49 x 94 mm) have a different color for each denomination.
There are 32 (red) houses and 12 (blue) hotels.
There are 2 dice (dim. 10 x 10 x 10 mm) with this set.
A separate instructions is supplied. The fold of it is at the top!

The 6 tokens are plastic pawns.

The price of this set amounted to C£ 5.25 (=  € 9.09) in November 1995 at Cyprus.

DELUXE version of the Cypriotic edition.Edition: The Cyprus Deluxe Monopoly
Publisher: J.J.Toys Ltd.-Tel.05-332831 - ± 1990
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 50.6 cm
The game:
This is of course a "real" Cyprian edition because it shows the island on both the lid and the game board. The presentation of the box is also slightly more luxury, although the game board is of thin cardboard.

Striking of this game board is that:

The word MONOPOLY is in open characters and parallel to the first
side of the board.

The question mark on the Chance-spaces is here also presented as
an upside down ! and the concerning cards are indicated as
red cards
(= Kokkines Kartes)
. However they are not situated next to Start but to
the Free Parking corner.

The Community Chest cards are here again reffered to as yellow cards (= Kitrines Kartes) and  marked as a 5-point yellow star.

On the Start field nothing is mentioned about a salary.

The not too youthful rascal in the Jail is behind 5 bars.

The petrol stations are illustrated with a petrol station.

The Electric Company field is replaced by the Cyprian Telecommunication Authority, whereas the Water Works space is here used for the island's Electric Company.

The policeman without a whistle, who send you to the Jail is in a summer dress.

The property deeds and banknotes are exactly the same as those of the red set.

The colors of the plastic houses and the slightly larger hotels have been exchanged compared to those of the red set.

The 4 hollow, plastic pawns and the 2 minuscule dice with black pips are also equal to those of the red set.

The price of this set amounted to C£ 2.50 (= € 4.43) in December 1995

Monopoly No.8070 (Greek).Edition: Monopoly, No. 8070
Publisher: Best Ltd. - Athens - 1992?
Dimensions of the box: 27.3 x 48.0 cm
The game:
The fact that Uncle Pennybags appears on the lid as well as the word MONOPOLY in a frame that is printed slantwise on the midfield of the purple game board, with Uncle Pennybags out the O, makes assuming an official cooperation with Parker Brothers. On the other hand the "double ring of properties" as such is that deviating that this game definitely can not be issued under the flag of Parker Brothers!
In the first "ring of streets" the usual combinations occur, the colors and prices of the properties however, are totally different. For example the red and yellow streets occur on the second side instead of on the third. All stations are now airports of Athens (resp. to Paris, Rome, Geneva and London). The man in Jail is a bit deformed, the "Parker car" of Free Parking became dark purple and the policeman of the 3rd corner grew a bit thinner!
At the end of the first ring you continue on the second one. At 2 of the 4 sides are 2 groups of 2 streets, whereas on the other sides is one group of 3 and one of 4 streets. On each of these short sides is a station of Athens, for the directions to Pyrgos, Thessaloniki, Larissa and the Peloponnesus. The engine on the space is very special! At the end of this ring you are back at Go. The yellow Chance- and red Community Chest cards have their Parker Brothers' illustrations again!
The dimensions of the property cards are 55 x 85 cm.
The small (43 x 90 mm) banknotes are specially designed for thid game and have resp. the values of 100 - 500 - 1000 - 2000 - 5000 - 10.000 and 50.000 Drachme.
The 32 green houses and 12 red hotels have overhanging roofs and a chimney. The 2 dice are of normal size again and the 6 heavy plastic tokens look like aggravation pawns. All those parts are packed in a green plastic bag!
The instructions are again on a normally folded paper.

The price of this set amounted to C£ 5.60 (=  € 9.54) in November 1995 at Cyprus.

Junior Monopoly (Greek).Edition: Junior Monopoly, No. 9000
Publisher: Best E.P.E. - Athens - 1992?
Dimensions of the box: 27.5 x 48 cm
of the unfolded board: 52.0 x 71.8 cm !
The game:
Because of the fact that this game resembles the Junior sets from Parker Brothers a lot, who for the first time appeared on the market in 1991, I date this Greek edition around 1992.

The extremely large game board of solid carton has 11 spaces between the corners on each long side, whereas the Parker games have 7. Both versions do have 7 on the shorter sides. But … this Greek game has another 18 extra spaces because at the 4th side a loop is made into the midfield of the board!
However, the similarity with Parker Brother sets is rather significant:

Greek Junior Nr. 9000

Parker JUNIOR versions

max. of 4 players - ages 5 to adult max. of 4 players - ages 5 to adult
4 sets of 20 plastic ticket booths 4 sets of 16 plastic ticket booths
the colors of the booths are : green-yellow-red-blue the colors of the booths are : green-yellow-red-blue
4 heavy pawns 4 little cars
50 Chance ("?") cards 24 Chance ("?") cards
banknotes of 10-20-30-40 and 50 Drachme banknotes of 1-2-3-4 and 5 without currency

Finally one big difference must be mentioned: All attributes are "loosely dumped" in the box, whereas the Parker sets always are provided with a plastic tray with holes!

The price of this set amounted to C£ 6.50 (=  € 11.36) in November 1995 at Cyprus.
