A. The first
publisher in France to publish City and
Island
games was:
TILSIT Éditions
8, place Marcel Rebuffat
91 140 - VILLEJUST
France
website: www.tilsit.fr
Their design of the games was very striking and different from the regular
standard editions. In particular their Island games are interesting because these
islands have in fact far too few residents to profitably issue a game. But since
those islands are considered to be French Departments and therefore are part
of France these editions were also sold in France. Unfortunately this company
made only 5 editions in the period between 1998 and 2000.
All TILSIT issues are published under the slogan
(Paris/The
Metropolis has no more monopoly over Monopoly)
Paris/La
Métropole n'a plus le "monopole" du
|
|
This is of course because the streets of the French standard
edition are of the metropolis Paris.
On the lid of these editions is always a brief sketch instead of a
picture of the game board. The bottom of each box shows the Quizz
MONOPOLY, consisting of 8 questions. Most questions relate to the edition in
question. The solutions are given underneath, upside down.
The flanks of the high lid show parts of the gameboard in question, while the
flanks of the innerbox always show illustrations of local landmarks.
The Rules are printed on solid paper in a distinguised purple
grey color.
The game board's back is always black. The back side of the
Chance- and Caisse de Communauté cards vary with each game, the
texts however are those of the standard edition adapted to the spaces of the
present game. The insert is of solid plastic and has besides 7 holes for the
banknotes another 4 deep holes for the attributes.
The 10 gilded tokens
are the well-known car - hat - wheel-barrow - rider-on-horse - dog - iron - boat
- shoe - thimble and canon.
The banknotes are in accordance with the modern issue with almost
unreadable mention "© 1996 Tonka Corporation" and having the
ref.number 1004535
OOA.
The green houses and red
hotels are of wood. Also both red
dice are of wood.
The prices of all of these editions were Ffr 300
(US$ 41.-) in June 2000.
Edition: Édition de Lyon, No.
Réf. 2981001
Publisher: TILSIT Éditions - Villejust - 1998
Dimensions of the box: 26.7 x 26.7 x 8.6 cm
The game:
This is the first Monopoly edition issued by TILSIT.
The space where with the numbered editions the number is
mentioned the frame now shows "Édition 2000".
The fold of the game board is not reinforced at the back, because of what
this fold will become plain after a few times using the board.
The back of the very beautifully
illustrated with scenes of Rich Uncle Pennybags, brown
grey Chance cards show a picture of a large building
(townhall?). The Community Chest cards have a blue
picture of a townscape with over that a dark
blue
treasure chest.

B. As
from 2000 the internationally operating company Winning Moves proceeded making
all kinds of City-, Regional- and Promotional editions from their French
address:
Winning Moves France
16, rue de Fontenay
94 300 - VINCENNES
France
website: www.winningmoves.fr
The first Winning Moves
editions appeared in Great Britain, later on followed by many other European countries.
They are all socalled "Authorized Opoly Games", i.a. they are
issued under the approval of and in cooperation with Hasbro. Like with all City Games a part of the profit comes from local
companies and institutions sponsoring the spaces. The prices of the streets
and other properties are always the same as those of the standard edition.
All editions are, like in other countries, made according to the same
pattern, viz.:
| The colorfull lid always shows under the Monopoly bar a composition
of pictures of landmarks of the city, with in perspective mid-under the
first and last spaces at the left and the right of Départ. |
| In the lower right corner are always 6 of 10 standard tokens, i.e.
car - boat - thimble - canon - wheelbarrow and rider-on-horse. The other tokens
of the set are dog - hat - shoe and iron. |
| The back of all game boards is purple. |
| The Banker's tray is a square tray of red
plastic on top of which the double folded game board is placed.
One hole
contains a small, transparant case, presumably for the houses and
hotels. |
| A second, slightly higher tray of green plastic
has 7 slots to store the banknotes. |
| The money consists of banknotes of a local well-known bank. |
| Each set is supplied with a socalled property pouch.
According to Winning Moves it is to store the houses and hotels. |
| All well finished green
plastic houses and red
plastic hotels have overhanging roofs and an excentrically placed
chimney. |
| The dice are white and have black pips. |
| Page 16 of the Rules always show pictures of all properties of the edition
concerned.

City games:
Edition:
Angers, without Réf.
Publisher: Winning Moves France/Hasbro - ±2000
Dimensions of the box: 40 x 5 x 27 cm
The game:
This may be well the first Winning Moves issue in France.
The story on the bottom of the box says:
"The city originally being the capital of the Gallic
tribe of the Andes was then called "Cité des Andécaves" later got
the name Juliomagus ("Julius César's market). In
turn the Foulques, the Plantagenoîts, the Capétiens and finally the Valois
ruled over the city.
Angers met a number of noble persons of the French history, such as the
Plantagenoîts, King René, François Rabelais and Joachim du Bellay. In his
castle the famous gobelin of the Revelation hangs.
Today Angers distinguishes by its wealth to heritages as well as its economic
and cultural dynamics. The presence of large industrial enterprises as well as
a considerable number of smaller businesses give the city a perspective of an
industrial town. Angers' economy is based on 5 pillars of activities, such as
electronics/computer sience, components for the car industry, insurance,
health care and the vegetable sector. The 2 universities and academies ensure
a good balance between education and economy. Because Paris is only an hour
and a half away by T.G.V. and thanks to the new business airport it is linked
to European metropolises Angers regularly is amongst the top places of the
winners of the press for high standard of living and industrial dynamics.
Finally Angers enjoys world reputation as being the access to the Loire
valley, recently certified by Unesco as a world inheritance of humanity."
Edition: Amiens, Réf. 0030
Publisher: Winning Moves France/Hasbro - ±2004
Dimensions of the box: 40 x 5 x 27 cm
The game:
The story on the bottom of the box says:
"Town of Jules Verne, Amiens is
recognized for its cathedral, the "Parthénon du gothique",
taken in the row of the fifty most important masterpieces of mankind.
Also celebrated for its market gardens, true floating gardens, Amiens is
crossed by many channels in its picturesque district of Saint-Leu.
Capital city of the Somme and the Picardy area, the city extends on several
arms from the Somme and its agglomeration adds up to 220.000 inhabitants.
Taking advantage of a rich agricultural area, Amiens knew to compensate for
the collapse of textile industry while becoming a turntable of the supply for
the automobile industry.
It commemorated with ostentation in March 2002 the peace treaty, which put an
end to the war between France and the other great European powers.
With the university of Picardy Jules Verne, it shows a real dynamism."

Regional games:
Edition:
Alsace, Réf.0102
Publisher: Winning Moves France/Hasbro - ±2003
Dimensions of the box: 40 x 5 x 27 cm
The game:
The story on the bottom of the box says:
"Alsace is the heiress of a fertile history which ensured
it an international vocation since always : union of the 10 imperial cities, the
Thirty Years war, industrial revolution, various influences; the past can be
recognized in the cities and villages with the medieval streets with
half-timbered houses and windows flowered, churches and fountains on the places.
And quite naturally tourism became one of the major assets of the area:
cathedrals, castles, museums of all kinds, residences along the rivers,
traditional storks and rich vineyards along a road of 170 km.
Its gastronomy charms the traveller as well as the Alsatians. Central area of
Europe, it shelters the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
A long industrial tradition, research centers and a powerful university, which
support a strong cultural activity of high behaviour, ensure an economic place
of choice in "the beautiful province"."
Edition:
Camargue, Réf. 0117
Publisher: Winning Moves France/Hasbro - ±2005
Dimensions of the box: 40 x 5 x 27 cm
The game:
The story on the bottom of the box says:
"The Camargue is a vast plain, enclosed by the two arms
of the Rhône and the Mediterranean Sea: the small Camargue in the west and
Crau in the east. The ceaseless fight of the Rhône and the sea, combined with
the action of man, constituted a mosaic of spots and landscapes.
In the north agricultural activities developed: fields of cereals,
asparaguses, vineyards and intensive rice growing as well.
The authentic, protected Camargue is situated in the south where marshes and
ponds dominate. The protection of this nature reserve conditions the diversity
and the geological balance of fauna (more than 300 listed species) and flora,
as well as the essential pastures with the traditional breeding of the bull
and the horse.
The Camargue, is also cities with their historical heritage, like Arles, of
which the Roman vestiges still testify to its splended past, Aigues-Mortes,
the city of Saint-Louis, Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer, capital of the Camargue,
…
It is in this ground of contrasts that Van Gogh came to seek the light.
Animated by the "Fé di Biou", the Camargue people make you revive
the ancestral habits of the protected culture and discover a tasty gastronomy."

Thematic games:
Edition:
Paris Saint-Germain, Réf. 0109
Publisher: Winning Moves France/Hasbro - ±2004
Dimensions of the box: 40 x 5 x 27 cm
The game:
The story on the bottom of the box says:
"The history of Paris Saint-Germain begins on August 12,
1970. The desire to have again a new grand club in Paris brought many
investors together around the same project: the PSG. The new club of Paris
joins to the first team of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the PSG begins in its
first National Season (ex-Second Division).
The results satisfy immediately to the appointment and the
club reaches the first division by gaining the "National"
championship in the season of 1970/71. However, it will last till the 1974/75
season and the arrival of Daniel Hechter, until the club really became a great
success.
Afterwards the titles and seasons succeed each other rapidly, with victories
as championships in 85/86 and 93/94, 6 times gain of the Coupe de France, 2
times the Coupe de la
Ligue and once the Coupe d'Europe des Vainqueurs de Coupe (UEFA
cup) in 1996.
Since its creation, the PSG became an actor impossible to circumvent within
the French championship. The PSG is thus at the third place on the list of the
best and became a club recognized in the whole world."
