France - Classic games

Presentation:
version 2000

Presentatie:
versie 2000.

 Number of versions: 23

 Edition: May 25,  2007

The French version of Monopoly (according to the Waddington design, so with the logo of the "2 locomotives with the 2 houses") was launched already in 1937, viz. the Miro Company in Parijs.
The above advertisement praise the game in L'ILLUSTRATION of December 17, 1938, a.o. with the slogan "More than a game - a passion".
(Click on the picture for a larger image.)

The streets and stations of the French edition are those of the capital city Paris. They are from Départ on:

Boul. de Belleville - Rue Lecourbe - Gare Montparnasse(/Chemin de fer de l'État) - Rue de Vaugirard - Rue de Courcelles - Avenue de la République - En prison/Simple visite - Boul. de la Villette - Avenue de Neilly - Rue de Paradis - Gare de Lyon(/Chemin de fer P.L.M.) - Avenue Mozart - Boulevard Saint-Michel The real Paris' street sign.- Place Pigalle - Parc Gratuit - Avenue Matignon - Boulevard Malesherbes - Avenue Henri-Martin - Gare du Nord(/Chemin de fer du Nord) - Faubourg Saint-Honoré - Place de la Bourse - Rue Lafayette - Allez en prison - Avenue de Breteuil - Avenue Foch - Boulevard des Capucines - Gare Saint- Lazare(/Chemin de fer de l'État) - Avenue des Champs-Élysées and the Rue de la Paix.

In the Waddingtons presentation of the game the Railway companies are mentioned with the stations.
As the presentation of the gameboard changed into the Parker Brothers design  (i.e. with black locomotive, blue treasure chest and gold ring on the Super Tax field) around 1961 that mention disappeared.

The board of 1937 is "according to Waddingtons".Edition: "Mini Box" - black - with separate board -
               Nouvelle Édition Populaire

               Modèle déposé -  Breveté S.G.D.G.

Patent applied for Nº  3796-36
Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - ±1937
Dimensions of the box: 25.5 x 25.5 cm
The game:
This is most probably one of the first French Monopoly sets produced in France.
I understand the mention
"Modèle déposé - Breveté S.G.D.G." (
model registered - without State warranty)  to be a kind of "patent applied for", however without any registration number. I therefore have the impression that the rider of the British pat.appl.for number is to make it looks "authorized" without being so.

The "engines illustration" sticked on the lid of the black box shows the £-sign through the middle O of Monopoly, which indicates the English origine of the game. In addition this is confirmed by the  green "Waddingtons locomotive" on the  station spaces. Also the Caisse de Communauté spaces only show a tiny circle with <-sign and the black rhomb on the Impot Supplementaire (
Super Tax) field.
Slanting over the lid is a blue green-white-blue green ribbon with the text Nouvelle ÉDITION POPULAIRE pour quatre joueurs (
New popular edition for 4 players). Left from this it says "Edition Française - MIRO COMPANY - PARIS".

The gameboard (with red back) is folded twice to fit in the square box. This very soft gameboard is made of a red linen or synthetic base material on which the 4 parts of the board are sticked on.The street names on the gameboard are mentioned twice in order to be read from all sides. The gameboard's midfield also tells us who the printer was: J.Minot. Imp. - Paris.
In the thirties not all railways belonged to the State. That is why the properties of the 4 stations state the various companies, viz.:

Gare Montparnasse - Chemin de fer de l'État (State Railways)
Gare de Lyon - Chemin de fer P.L.M.  (
Paris-Lyon-Marseille Railways)
Gare du Nord - Chemin de fer du Nord (
North Railways)
Gare Sait-Lazare - Chemin de fer de l'État (
State Railways)

The white-light blue Chance and full orange Caisse de Communauté cards have large rounded corners. The Monopoly banknotes contains the text "pat.app.for no.3796-36" and are in the 7 denominations (printed on colored paper): Fr 100 - 500 - 1.000 (white) - 2.000 - 5.000 - 10.000 and 50.000. Over Départ you receive Fr 20.000.
The 4 tokens are flat ribbed ceramic squares in the colors light brown - green - light blue and light pink. The green houses and red hotels  are made of wood.
Both dice are yellow (ivory?) with black pips.

The set was "fabriqué en France".

Standard edition, Waddingtons design, white box, 1945? Edition
: Standard - white box, without Réf. nr.
               Modèle déposé - Breveté S.G.D.G.

               Patent applied for Nº  3796-36
Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - 1945
Dimensions of the box:  25.5 x 51 cm
The game:
This edition is dated 1945 because at the end of the Rules it says "Dépot légal: 4eme trimestre 1945". It may, however be a few years younger. It is therefore highly likely that this standard edition was issued by the Miro Company simultaneously with the more luxury brown box and the slightly cheaper small box.

The gameboard of solid cardboard has a white back showing the same
red illustration of Rich Uncle Pennybag's predecessor and the "engines illustration" as on the lid of the box. Again the board shows the name of the printer: J.Minot. Imp. - Paris.
The word Monopoly is in open characters on top of the "engines illustration" in the middle of the gameboard and parallel to the first side. Also for the rest this issue is still according to the Waddingtons design, i.a. the streets are of course those of Paris, however the  board show
green locomotives heading backwards. All railway companies are still mentioned at the stations.
The innerbox contains 2 white cardboard inserts with a
red tray inbetween. In this tray are again 6 small red trays for the various attributes.
The banknotes are the same as of earlier editions. The 4 tokens are
red , round wooden discs (diam. 21 mm) with Monopoly print as well as the numbers 1 to 4. The green houses and red hotels are of wood as well.
Both dice are white.

Small white box of about 1948.Edition: Small, white box, without Réf.
               Modèle déposé - Breveté S.G.D.G.

               Patent applied for Nº  3796-36
Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - 1948
Dimensions of the box: 25.8 x 25.8 cm
The game:
Only a date 1948 shown at the end of the Rules ("Dépot légal: 1er trimestre 1948") is proof this set cannot be older, although it contains the double folded game board of the "black box 1937", so without copyright date.
These very soft game boards are made of a red linen or synthetic base material on which the 4 parts of the board are glued.

The lid of this white box has the "engines illustration" sticked on as well. It now shows mid under "Edition Française - MIRO COMPANY - PARIS". And still the board shows:

All streetnames twice.

The stations of different railway companies. The property deeds of Gare Saint-Lazare and Gare de Lyon still mention resp. État and P.L.M..

The innerbox has white sides and a white cardboard insert, whereupon the "engines illustration" has been  printed in red. In this insert are 4 holes into which trays with dark red sides fit. Two of them have a partition. These trays are meant for the attributes.

The light blue Chance and  beige Caisse de Communauté cards show a wave line pattern on each side. All 7 denominations of the Monopoly banknotes bear the text "pat.app.for no.3796-36" and are printed on white paper with a recurring pattern of the word Monopoly on their back side.
The 4 tokens are round wooden discs (diam. 21 mm) with a brown Monopoly print as well as the numbers 1 to 4. The green houses and red hotels are made of dull wood.
Both dice are blue with deep pips.

The price of this set amounted to US$ 30.- in April 1998.

Brown box of 1948, version (1).Edition: Monopoly - brown box (1), without Réf.
              Modèle déposé -  Breveté S.G.D.G.
              Patent applied for Nº  3796-36

Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - ±1948
Dimensions of the box: 26.3 x 51.3 cm
The game:
This set is owned by Jean-François Diaz - Paris.
The "engines illustration" with red border may not be present on the lid nor the board's back, however, it is reduced to a small black logo in a double frame, like it is in the innerbox of the preceding small box.
Under the "engines illustration" on the centrefield of the solid gameboard it still says "patent applied for
Nº  3796-36". The design of the board is according to Waddingtons, so with the green locomotives on the station fields pointing backwards. The printer of this set, Michels Fils. - Paris,  is mentioned on the board.

The box and the board's back is covered with a  brown bubbled paper
The innerbox has two cardboard inserts with a "banker's tray" with 10 holes in between covered with dark green bubbled paper.
The stations still are of different companies. The 5 tokens are again
round discs (diam. 21 mm), however now made of black wood with a gold Monopoly print and the numbers 1 to 5. The Chance cards are light blue and the Caisse de Communauté cards beige. They both have a wire pattern.

Brown box of 1948, version (2).Edition: Monopoly - brown box (2), without Réf.
              Modèle déposé -  Breveté S.G.D.G.
              Patent applied for Nº  3796-36
Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - ±1948
Dimensions of the box: 27.3 x 51.3 cm
The game:
This set is also owned by Jean-François Diaz - Paris.
This variant of the
" brown box with gold stickers" is that much different from (1) that is has to be considered as another version.
The interesting differences are:

  1. The "logo in a double frame" on gold stickers is red

  2. The "banker's tray" between the 2 brown inserts is made of cardboard with "plaid pattern".

  3. The printer of the game board is J.Minot. Imp. - Paris again, so the same one as of the board of the white box from this period.

  4. The banknotes have a pattern of the word Monopoly on the back side.

  5. The property card of Gare de Lyon still shows P.L.M. and that of Gare Saint-Lazare says État

  6. The rent for the unbuilt properties is still Frs.2.200 for all 3 yellow streets.

  7. The green houses and red hotels are made of dull  wood.

The other attributes are exactly the same as those of version (1), incl. the dark blue and red dice.

The price of this set amounted to € 22.65 in October 2000.

English "Mini Box" withTrade Mark.Edition: (English) "Mini box"- red - with separate board
              Trade mark - 711981
               Property Trading Board Game

Publisher: John Waddington Ltd. - Great Britain - ±1953
Dimensions of the box:16.3 x 19.2 x 2.8 cm
                  of the board: 49.3 x 49.3 cm
The game:
This set is owned by Jimmy Reus (Dutch Nat.Mon.Champion-2000) - NL
.
Outside America England was the first country to market Monopoly games in the thirties as well. For the French market this game (with the streets of London) was supplied with 2 sets of Rules, one of which in French of course.

This issue, however, is of later date, because at the end of the Rules it says "1944. 9/53". With this issue the lid only says Trade Mark, while the French Rules show both British Trade Mark and British patent No. 453689. (See also chapter "GB-Classic games").

It is also striking that the 6 metal tokens-on-a-base are totally different, namely sailing boat (golden) - tank-with-canon - bulldozer - car - motorbike-with-driver and electric locomotive
The profound colored banknotes show only "Monopoly" on top of the figure in the ellipse, without any reference to a patent. Of course the currency is pounds, because it finally is an English set.
The green houses and red hotels are made of wood.
One die is
blue with white pips, the other one is red.

Plaid pattern box (1) - 1958. Edition: Monopoly - plaid pattern (1), without Réf.
               Modèle déposé. Breveté S.G.D.G.
               Patent applied for Nº  3796-36

Publisher: Miro Company - 1958
Dimensions of the box: 27.5 x 51.4 cm
The game:
The unique "brown, white and black plaid pattern", first applied
for some parts in the brown box (2) in 1948 (see above), controls the whole design of this edition, owned by Thomas O.Duncan - Arkadelphia - AR - USA.

Since the game board with a dark green centre-field still shows
the "engines illustration" (= two locomotives and two houses underneath the word Monopoly, with a £-symbol through the mid O), typical for the Waddingtons design, this issue must be from before 1961. This is confirmed by a control sticker (51x63 mm)  showing the number 758 H, which most probably means "checked by employee H in July 1958". The "engines illustration" is in red on gold background label on the box, game board and the Rules folder. The properties have their names still printed twice.
The
box is made of very heavy cardboard, every part of it covered with the plaid pattern paper. The innerbox has 11 holes for the attributes, a tiny little square one being specially prepared to hold the dice.
The light blue Chance- and light yellow Caisse de Communauté cards have a wire pattern.
The 7 denominations of the Monopoly banknotes ("pat.app.for no.3796-36") are made of white paper: Fr 100 - 500 - 1.000 - 2.000 - 5.000 - 10.000 and 50.000
The houses and hotels are of white plastic with resp. a green and  red overhanging roof and "Made in France" on the bottom.
Very special tokens-1958.There are 8 nice, lead tokens with an average weight of 12.6 g: rowboat - turtle - suitcase - easy-chair - white chamber pot - shoe - men's dress hat and a canteen. These very particular
(only applied in France?) tokens have been applied in other
editions of this era as well.
The standard Rules are in a solid cardboard folder covered with the plaid pattern paper. The inside of this folder is lined with paper containing a spriral motif consisting of different sized versions of "Offrir un jeu Miro Company c'est donner de la joie" (
"Offering a game from the Miro Company is giving pleasure".)
The dice are red with white pips.

A sticker on the lid shows that this set was bought in Paris in the shop "Au nain bleu" ("In the blue dwarf") - 406, Rue St.Honoré.

Such a set was sold for $ 75.- on ebay in March 2002.

Brown box (3)-1958.Edition: Monopoly - brown box (3), without Réf.
              Modèle déposé. Breveté S.G.D.G.
              Patent applied for Nº  3796-36

Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - 1958
Dimensions of the box: 27.5 x 51.4 cm
The game:
It was James Hustler - UK, the owner, who provided me with the information about this edition. This set matches the "plaid pattern (1)" set a lot, reason why I also date it in about 1958.

In the top left corner of the lid, covered in brown paper with a wood grain effect, is a gold sticker showing the word Monopoly in a frame in brown characters with the Waddingtons "engines illustration" (two locomotives and two houses and the £-symbol through the mid O) there under.
Of course the same "engines illustration" is in the centre of the game board, however in black. This means the set must be from before 1961.
Other typical Waddingtons features of the game board are:

the green locomotives on the station spaces pointing backwards.

the properties' titles appearing above and reversed below.

the chevron-with-dot on the Caisse de Communauté spaces, rather than the blue treasure chest.

the property card of Gare de Lyon still shows P.L.M. and that of Gare Saint-Lazare État

the rent for the unbuilt properties is still Frs.2.200 for all 3 yellow streets.

The box is made of very heavy cardboard, every part of it covered with the brown paper with a wood grain effect. The innerbox contains a banker's tray that has 11 holes for the attributes, a tiny little square one being specially prepared to hold the dice and only one cardboard insert. If you flip over this insert there is a little rack to store the property cards in, however this may have been added by an owner at a later date.
The light blue Chance- and light ellow Caisse de Communauté cards with rounded corners have a wire pattern. The 7 denominations of the Monopoly banknotes ("pat.app.for no.3796-36") are printed on white paper: Fr 100 - 500 - 1.000 - 2.000 - 5.000 - 10.000 and 50.000
The houses and hotels are of white plastic with resp. a green and  red overhanging roof. However, these houses and hotels has nothing written on the bottom.
There are those 8 nice, lead tokens again: rowboat - turtle - suitcase - easy-chair - chamber pot - shoe - men's dress hat and a canteen/wine sack
The Rules are in a cardboard folder in the same  brown wood grain as the box. The inside of this folder is lined with paper containing a spiral motif consisting of different sized versions of "Offrir un jeu Miro Company c'est donner de la joie" (
"Offering a game from the Miro Company is giving pleasure".) At the bottom of the last page there are the following "6146 Imp. Kapp. Vannes (Seine)" and "Copyright by Miro Company, Paris 1937".
The large, plastic (or ivory?)  dice are red with white pips.

These sets were "Fabriqué en France".

An original price tag on the bottom of the box tells this particular set was bought in the well-known Galeries Lafayette in Paris at the price of (old) Fr 4250 (~ € 6.50 today).

Small white box 1961.Edition: Small box, without Réf.
             "Copyright © 1935, 1946, 1961 by
               Parker Brothers Inc.
"
"Marque et modèle déposés - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Parker Bros./Miro Company - Paris - 1962
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 25.7 cm
The game:
This set is owned by J. Santo - Florida - USA.
These white boxes have been issued in a number of European countries between 1961 and about 1982. That may have to do with the fact that they all were manufactured in France.
On the lid they all still have the "engines illustration with 2 locomotives, 2 houses and the  £-sign with Oncle Riche's precursor on top" in a red frame. There is no patent number mentioned under the illustration but instead it says "Tous droits réservés - Marque et modèle déposés". This also agrees with other countries' editions like those of The Netherlands and Germany.
They are a kind of transition versions between the original Waddingtons editions with the "engines illustration" and the Parker Brothers version with black locomotives on the station spaces, the blue treasure chest of the Caisse de Communauté and the gold ring of the Taxe de Luxe spaces.
The game contains a
small inspection paper on which the numbers 7 and 1062 appear. This doubtless means "checked by employee 7 in October 1962", because of what the time of issue is fixed.

This edition still looks very much like the small box of 1948, because:

It shows the Waddingtons "engines illustration" both on the lid as on the board.

The names of the properties are still mentioned 2 times in order to be well read from all directions.

The property card of Gare de Lyon still shows P.L.M. and that of Gare Saint-Lazare État

The rent for the unbuilt properties is still Frs.2.200 for all 3 yellow streets.

The 4 tokens are round blank wooden discs (diam. 21 mm) with a Monopoly print as well as the numbers

The innerbox has a white rim without text and an insert of white cardboard showing the "engines illustration" in red. This insert has 4 holes in which trays (with dark red rim) fit. Two of them have a partition.

The green houses and red hotels are of dull wood.

On the other hand it already has a number of matches to the small white box with Ref. 011, viz. the clear features of the Parker Brothers design:

The locomotives on the station spaces are black and point ahead.

The blue treasure chest on the Caisse de Communauté spaces.

The Taxe de Luxe space shows a gold ring with diamond.

The wheels of the car on Parc Gratuit are white (instead of red).

The Monopoly banknotes ("pat.app.for no.3796-36") are like with the other editions again in 7 denominations, printed in color on white paper: Fr 100 - 500 - 1.000 (wit) - 2.000 - 5.000 - 10.000 and 50.000
Both dice are green with yellow pips.

Special box of 1965.Edition: Standard, without Réf.

"Marque et modèle déposés - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - 1964
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
This set has something special because the insert with holes for the attributes is a piece of polystyrene foam that has 111 (?) raised houses and 8 more or less deep holes. In the centre is a Miro Company tag.
The board's back is white and one half of it also has the "engines illustration" printed. Both parts are joined by a red linen tape. In the centre of the blue green midfield of the game board is Monopoly in closed black characters parallel to the first side. The property names are always twice on the spaces so they can be read all sided.
The property card of Gare de Lyon still shows P.L.M. and that of Gare Saint-Lazare État.
The rent for the unbuilt properties is still Frs.2.200 for all 3 yellow streets.
The only 5 tokens are black
round wooden discs (diam. 21 mm) with a gold Monopoly print as well as the numbers 1 to 5. The light blue Chance and  beige Caisse de Communauté cards have a little bars pattern on both sides. The 7 denominations of the Monopoly banknotes ("pat.app.for no.3796-36") are: Fr 100 - 500 - 1.000 - 2.000 - 5.000 - 10.000 and 50.000
Both dice are white with black pips.

Orange brown box (6) - 1961Edition: Monopoly - orange/brown box (6), without Réf.

"Marque et modèle déposés - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Parker/Miro Company - Paris - 1964
Dimensions of the box: 28.5 x 51.3 cm
The game:
This is a set owned by Jimmy Reus - Lutjebroek - NL.

This set also shows many features of the transition version (transition from
the Waddingtons design into the Parker Brothers design
), like the white box with polystyrene foam insert. However it is also very similar to the brown box (1)
of 1948. Features are:

Heavy and solid box covered with bubbled orange/brown paper,
the board's back as well.

Both on the upper left corner of the lid and one part of the board's back
shows the Monopoly+enigines-illustration-in-a-frame in black, i.e. Waddingtons design.

The copyright year underneath the word Monopoly in closed, black characters says 1961, i.e. Parker Brothers design.

The innerbox contains 2 orange/brown cardboard inserts and a dark green bubbled paper covered "banker's tray" with 10 holes.

The property names are always twice on the spaces so they can be read allsided, i.e. Waddingtons design.

The property card of Gare de Lyon still shows P.L.M. and that of Gare Saint-Lazare État, i.e. Waddingtons design.

The rent for the unbuilt properties is still Frs.2.200 for all 3 yellow streets, i.e. Waddingtons design.

The 6 tokens are black round wooden discs (diam. 21 mm) with a gold Monopoly print as well as the numbers 1 to 6.

The light blue Chance and  beige Caisse de Communauté cards have a little bars pattern on both sides.

The Monopoly banknotes ("pat.app.for no.3796-36") are again in 7 denominations, printed on white paper with a recurring pattern of Monopoly on the back: Fr 100 - 500 - 1.000 - 2.000 - 5.000 - 10.000 and 50.000

The green houses and red hotels are of glossy  wood.

The Rules are not in a folder.

The beige (or ivory?) dice have black pips.

Brown box of about 1964. Edition: Monopoly - brown box (7), without Réf.

"Copyright 1935, 1946, 1961 by Parker
               Brothers USA

"Marque et modèle déposés - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Parker/Miro Company - Paris - 1964
Dimensions of the box: 28.5 x 51.3 cm
The game:
This is a set owned by Deborah Durham - UK
Although this issue resembles very much the brown box (3) from 1958 in such a way that I had the impression one of them to be a composition of various editions I do believe this one must be issued a few years later.

Identical parts in this set compared to the one of James Husler of 1958 are f.e.:
1. The gold sticker Monopoly on the lid, a back side of the
board as well on the hard cover of the Rules.
2. The same  8 nice, lead tokens: rowboat - turtle - suitcase - easy-chair - chamber pot - shoe -
      men's dress hat and a canteen/wine sack.
3. The same composed plastic houses and hotels.
4. The same banknotes.
The main difference is the design of the game board. There is no more "engines illustration" on the centre field of the board, only Monopoly in closed black characters and 1961 as latest copyright year.

On the hand it appeared that all those parts are also in the brown edition (4) of Jean-François Dias of 1965. And this edition also has the gameboard with closed black characters, while the division of the innerbox is different.

All this makes me believe this edition to be issued about 1964.

The small white box ref.011.Edition: Small box, Réf. 011
"Marque et modèle déposés - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Parker Bros./Miro Company - Paris - 1965
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 25.7 cm
The game:
The lid of this white box still shows the "engines illustration" with the £-sign through the middle O. On top of this illustration is Oncle Riche's "precursor" waving with a bundle of banknotes of 1000. Under to the
right it says in a red frame,
"Licence Parker Brothers USA". The border of the lid shows the word Monopoly in a red bar and the reference number 011 is on all sides. (Compare this issue with ref. 601 1011 from Germany and ref. 611 from Holland.)

The game board is of solid cardboard and it's back is red. The word Monopoly on the board's midfield is parallel to side one and is in closed characters. The stations are no longer property of P.L.M. or the State. The plastic insert of the innerbox contains 5 holes for the cards, banknotes and other attributes.
This edition is for just "two to four players", reason why there are only 4 colored, plastic tokens. The Monopoly banknotes ("pat.app.for no.3796-36") are again in 7 denominations, printed on colored paper: Fr 100 - 500 - 1.000 (white) - 2.000 - 5.000 - 10.000 and 50.000
The green houses and red hotels are of plastic.

The game was manufactured in France.

Plaid pattern (2) edition - 1961.Edition: Monopoly - plaid pattern (2), without Réf.
              "Copyright 1935, 1946, 1961 by Parker
               Brothers USA

"Marque et modèle déposés - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Parker/Miro Company - Paris -1965
Dimensions of the box: 26.7 x 50.8 cm
The game:
The owner of this edition Barb Scott - Enon - Ohio - USA,  provided me with the necessary information for this description.

The exterior of the box, as well as the back of the game board have the same brown, white and black plaid pattern as the issue of 1958, but this edition is totally different for the rest. The game board is according to the Parker Brothers design, because of the features:

No more "engines illustration" on the centre field of the board, only Monopoly in closed black characters.

The locomotives on the station spaces are black and point forward.

The blue treasure chest on the Caisse de Communauté spaces.

The Taxe de Luxe space shows a gold ring with diamond.

The wheels of the car on Parc Gratuit are white (instead of red).

Further more typical for this issue are:

The stations are no longer property of P.L.M. or the State.

The gold sticker shows the word Monopoly in black characters in a frame. Under it Miro is printed as a logo, together with the Parker Brothers swirl and the remark "jeux de société" between 2 black Parker Brothers locomotives.

The sturdy plastic insert of the innerbox consists of 2 parts: a brown part (the "banker's tray") with 7 slots for the banknotes and a dark green one with 7 compartments for the other attributes.

The light blue Chance and light pink Caisse de Communauté cards show the recurring pattern of "engines and Oncle Riche".

The green houses and red hotels are the usual ones, made of plastic.

The 7 tokens are the silver metal ones: thimble - hat - dog - iron - wheelbarrow - shoe and rider-on-rearing-horse.

The banknotes are printed on white paper, the same as of the other issues of this era.

The Rules do not have a folder.

Special edition 30st anniversary -1965?Edition: Monopoly - light brown box (4), without Réf.

"Marque et modèle déposés - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Parker/Miro Company - Paris - 1965
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
On the game board of this special edition (owned by Jean-François Dias - Paris) is the copyright year 1961. However it is very likely that this set was issued in honour of the 30st  anniversary, so in the year 1965. (In Holland a similar edition was marketed and in America a brown wooden box was issued in this year.)

Like in the Dutch set both the lid of the light brown box and the back of the game board have a gold sticker showing the word Monopoly in brown characters with under it 2 brown Parker Brothers locomotives and the Miro logo inbetween.
On the board the black engines are heading forwards,  which means that the Waddingtons design is replaced by the Parker Brothers one.
Other features of the Parker Brothers design are:

No more "engines illustration" on the centre field of the board, only Monopoly in closed black characters.

The blue treasure chest on the Caisse de Communauté spaces.

The Taxe de Luxe space shows a gold ring with diamond.

The wheels of the car on Parc Gratuit are white (instead of red).

Both parts of the gameboard are joined together by a black linen tape.
Furthermore this is a special edition because:

The stations are no longer property of P.L.M. or the State.

The insert is of brown plastic and that, except for 7 holes for the banknotes, also contains 8 well shaped holes for the other attributes.

Whereas the Dutch edition has the round black discs of the French Standard set as "special" tokens, this issue has 6 of those nice, lead tokens as from the "plaid pattern (1)" issue of 1958 (see the picture) with an average weight of 12.6 g: rowboat - turtle - suitcase - easy-chair - white chamber pot and a canteen.

The houses and hotels are of white plastic with resp. a green and  red overhanging roof and "Made in France" on the bottom.

The Rules are in a cardboard folder of the same  brown color as the back of the board.

The banknotes show again the text "pat.app.for no.3796-36" and are similar to those of earlier editions. The light blue Chance- and pink Caisse de Communauté cards show the recurring pattern of "engines and Oncle Riche".

Orange brown edition of 1968.Edition: Monopoly - orange/brown box (5), without Réf.

"Marque et modèle déposés - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Parker/Miro Company - Paris - 1965
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
The owner, Tim Matthews - Kent - UK, remembers that 'this set
was brought over from France in 1965 by a friend of the family because we had a french au-pair.'
This most probably means the set was bought in the year of issue, because:

The game board is according to the Parker Brothers
design
as it is being applied since 1961.

In the late 60's the manufacturer applied sturdy plastic inserts for the innerbox, both in  one piece as well in 2 parts.

As the picture shows the plastic inserts in this box have diffent colors: a cream-colored one with holes for the attributes and a dark blue green one as "banker's tray" for the 7 banknotes.
But what is so special of this issue is the fact that
the box and the board's back are covered with a  brown bubbled paper, like the issue from 20 years earlier, compare the brown box (1) from 1948.

Other features of  this issue are:

The gold sticker shows the word Monopoly in brown characters in a frame. Under it Miro Company is printed between 2 brown Parker Brothers locomotives.

The light blue Chance and light pink Caisse de Communauté cards have repeated logos of the Parker locomotive and Oncle Riche  across the back of the cards.

The green houses and red hotels are the usual ones, made of plastic.

The tokens are the simple plastic pawns.

The banknotes are the same as of the other issues of this era, i.a. printed on white paper, still with the mention "pat.app.for no.3796-36".

The Rules do not have a folder.

There are 2 red dice with white pips.

This edition was "Printed in France".

Standard edition in new presentation.Edition: Standard,  Réf. 77314/000155 3 (1)
             "Licence Parker Brothers Inc. U.S.A."

Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - ±1968
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
Like in other European countries Monopoly games became a new and more colorful appearance around the end of the sixtees. The Waddingtons "engines illustration" on the lid was replaced by the "gameboard in green in blue square with red Monopoly bar" with under that the logo of (for the first time real) Oncle Riche in a red square inbetween 2  blue Parker locomotives. In the red square is the number 77314. However there is no "Parker swirl".

The backside of the solid board is red. The word Monopoly on the board's midfield is in closed black characters and is parallel to side one. The stations are no longer property of P.L.M. or the State.
The innerbox contains, except for the red plastic insert with 7 holes for the banknotes, also a red cardboard insert that shows not only the word Monopoly (in white characters) but also the design of the tokens. The 6 tokens are colored plastic pawns. The light blue Chance- and pink Caisse de Communauté cards show the recurring pattern of "engines and Oncle Riche".
The green houses and red hotels are plastic.

This game was "imprimé en France" and was also sold in Belgium.

Edition: Standard,  Réf. 77314/000155 3 (2)
             "Licence Parker Brothers Inc. U.S.A."

Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - ±1968
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
The only difference with the previous edition is it's cheaper finish with soft game board. The back side of the board is white.
It is however rather strange that is has exactly the same ref. number.

Small white box of 1968.Edition: Small box, Réf. 77314/ 001
              "Licence Parker Brothers Inc. U.S.A."

Publisher: Miro Company - Paris - ±1968
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 25.7 cm
The game:
This small white box of course is very similar to the long standard one except for the double folded gameboard.
The folds of this plasticized soft board have not been strengthened and so they can easily tear.
Inside the innerbox with red border is a white insert of very thin plastic, with 5 holes for the attributes.

Again the banknotes are provided with the text "pat.app.for no.3796-36" and are the same as those of earlier issues. The light blue Chance- and pink Caisse de Communauté cards show the recurring pattern of "engines and Oncle Riche".

The colorful logo of Miro-Meccano.Edition: Standard, Réf. 560012, with MM logo (1)

"Marque et modèle déposé - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Parker/Miro-Meccano S.A. - Paris - ±1968
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
Apparently the MIRO Company and Meccano merged at the end of the sixtees, but the game is still packed in a white box with "engines illustration", typical for the Waddingtons design.

1968: still a white box with "engines illustration".The differences with the "Standard edition without ref." of a few years earlier are remarkable. Even now the  game board's midfield show 1961 as latest copyright date, however:

The insert is of cream-colored plastic and contains besides the
7 spaces for the banknotes also 6 deeper holes.

The 6 tokens are colored plastic pawns.

The light blue Chance- and pink Caisse de Communauté
cards show the recurring pattern of "engines and Oncle Riche".

The  green houses and red hotels are of plastic and have
overhanging roofs without chimney.

Both dice are red  with white pips.

A comparison with the similar white boxes from Germany and Holland gives next interesting tabel:

Dimensions of the box: 26.0 x 50.8 cm

The mahogany colored lid shows the gameboard in gold print inside the field of 2 squares as we know from the European editions made in France since 1961. Also in gold print is the "2 engines with Oncle Riche" logo, but without currency mark. This logo is on top of the horizontal bar with the word Monopoly large white characters. In the lower right corner is the Miro-Meccano logo.

The fold of the board (with red colored back) is parallel to 2nd side.
The innerbox with red borders contains 2 nice looking inserts lined with red felt.  One has 7 spaces for the banknotes, the other is destined for property cards, houses, tokens and other equipment.
The Chance and Caisse de Communauté cards resp. have a blue and pink print of the "engines with Oncle Riche" pattern on the back.
The 7 banknotes (Monopoly - pat.app.for No.3796-36) are in denominations of 100 to 50,000. There is twice as much money as usual so that the game can be played by 9 persons.

The plastic houses and hotels have overhanging  roofs but no chimney.
Both dice are red with gold colored pips.

The new Miro logo.Edition: Standard, Réf. 560012, with Parker swirl logo (2)
Publisher: Parker/Miro-Meccano S.A. - Paris - 1982
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
There are but  3 differences between this edition issued about 14 years after version (1), namely:

The board's midfield shows 1982 as latest copyright date.

The publisher uses a new logo, viz. his own company name on top of the "Parker swirl".

On the centrefield of the game board is the word Monopoly in open characters.

The price of this set amounted to DM 19.- (€ 9.85) in October 1998.

Small box, ref.560003-1982.Edition: Small box, Réf. 560003
              "Copyright  1935, 1946, 1961, 1982 by Parker Brothers USA"
"Marque et modèle déposé - Tous droits réservés"
Publisher: Parker/General Mills S.A. - Pantin - 1982
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 25.7 cm
The game:
With the comming of the 1982 colorful new design the Miro Company obviously lost the right to publish Monopoly. Although it is still what I call the "patentless era" (only Trade mark) the Parker Brothers company took over the control.

This new presentation shows the dark blue streets and Départ on top of the red bar with Monopoly in white characters on the lid. The rim of the lid shows the red bar on each side.
On the midfield of the blue green game board is the word Monopoly in open characters, without a frame but with Rich Uncle Pennybags out the mid O, parallel to the first side.  It's back is red. The printing on the board's fields is no longer in duplicate.
The white innerbox contains a tray of soft white plastic with 5 holes for all attributes. It's bottom is unprinted.
The 7 banknotes (Monopoly - pat.app.for No.3796-36) are printed on colored paper in denominations of 100 to 50,000.
The 6 tokens are colored plastic pawns.
The light blue Chance- and pink Caisse de Communauté cards show the recurring pattern of "engines and Oncle Riche". The  green houses and red hotels are of plastic and have overhanging  roofs. The houses do have a chimney, the hotels haven't.

Both dice are
red with gold colored pips.

The set was manufactured in France.
