Edition: Standard,
Réf. 560002
Publisher: Parker/Kenner Parker France - 1985
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
As in other countries (although 3 years later than in Holland and
Germany!?) with this edition a new presentation has been
introduced.
The lid of this box no longer shows the "engines illustration".
Instead the presentation became much more colorful. On top of a red
bar with MONOPOLY in white characters, is Départ with a part of the Boul. de
Belleville, the Rue de la Paix (unbuild, with car) and the Avenue des
Champs-Élysées with 1 house (with chimney, whereas the houses and hotels of
the game don't have a chimney!). The rim of the cover shows the red
Monopoly bar 4 times.
The white innerbox contains a solid insert of cream
plastic with 13 holes for the banknotes and attributes. For the first time the bottom
is printed as well, viz. with 3 poor black and white picures and a scanty
description of the game.
On the midfield of the blue green gamebord
is the word MONOPOLY in open characters, whitout frame but with Oncle
Riche out of the O, parallel to the 1st side. It's back is red.
The fold is parallel to the 2nd side of the board. The names are no longer
double mentioned on the fields.
Although the Monopoly banknotes still have the texst
"pat.app.for no.3796-36" the colors of the 7 denominations are changed
into: Fr 100 (white) - 500 (pink) - 1.000
(yellow) - 2.000 (green)
- 5.000 (blue) - 10.000 (white) and 50.000 (orange). Over Départ
you receive Fr. 20,000 again.
The 8 metal tokens are the well known car, hat thimble, wheel-barrow,
dog, boat, shoe and iron.
The blue Chance-
and pink
Caisse de Communauté
cards do have the repeating pattern of "engines with Uncle Riche" on
the back. The green plastic houses
and red hotels have overhanging roofs
without chimney.
Both dice are red with gold pips.

The game:
The lid of this issue (of the same year!) is also colorful, but this time
the red Monopoly-bar is on the top with
under that the last part of the fourth side. The rim of the cover shows again
the red Monopoly-bar on 4 sides.
The innerbox contains a solid insert of red
plastic devided in a total of 13 holes for the banknotes and attributes. On the bottom
of the box is a black and white picture of the gameboard with all
attributes with 2 insets of smaller pictures.
The blue green gameboard
shows the word MONOPOLY (with Oncle Riche) in closed characters in a
frame sloping over the midfield. The tokens are 6 plastic pawns.
The green plastic houses do have a
chimney, the red hotels don't. The Chance-
and Caisse de Communauté
cards, the banknotes and dice are all equal to those of the other
edition of this year.
This set was manufactured in France, what is mentioned in two languages in a
circle at the rim of the cover.
The price of this set amounted to Ffr 119,- (= US$ 20.-)
in August 1991.

Tin "1935", 50-ème Anniversaire
Publisher: Parker Brothers - 1985
Dimensions of the tin: 8.4 x 27 x 27 cm
The game:
In honour of the 50th anniversary in France of course "the tin"
has been issued as well. The lid of this very special edition shows a.o. in
relief "COMMEMORATIVE EDITION 1935". The flanks of the
tin are illustrated with houses with Oncle Riche in action in front.
On
the bottom of the tin is a colored sticker with the text "MONOPOLY 1935
COMMEMORATIVE EDITION". Furthermore is says: " …. This unique
edition replicates the original 1935 Parker Brothers board game from its
allustrated classic cover design to its famous game components. The original
cannon, car, purse, lantern and rocking horse tokens are reissued in a
gold-tone finish just for this edition. As a special a locomotive is added to

Also the instructions are very luxurious. They mention in short the history
of the game and is ample illustrated with many versions of MONOPOLY sets.
Inside the tin is a blue, plastic tray for
as well the banknotes as the houses/hotels, dice, tokens and title deed cards. The strong
cardboard board is folded
in four. Its back is black and the play-side is bluegreen.
Edition: Das/l'
Original
Publisher: ASS - Leinfelden - 1986
Dimensions of the box: 26.5 x 50.2 cm
The game:
On the lid of this original, bilingual set (French and German)
is this quotation from "Spiele anders als andere" by Sid Sackson of
1981 saying:
"This reproduction of the original document will doubtless recall
memories to anybody who ever played MONOPOLY. Indeed the way from "Landlord's
Game" to "Monopoly" goes by …. MONOPOLY! In the early twenties
a game under this name was used already in many university cities on the east
coast of America: there handmade game boards were used with mostly local names
for the properties and a game was played already that a few years later
conquered the world." (Read the book "The
Billion Dollar Monopoly Swindle").
On the back of the box stands:
"On Januari 5th, 1904 a game was patented at the United States Patent
Office under No. 748,626: THE LANDLORDS GAME,
by Lizzie J.Magie:
To all whom it may concern:
Be it
known that I,
LIZZIE J.Magie, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brentwood, in the
county of Prince George and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and
useful Improvements in Game - Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention, which I have designated "The landlord's game," relates
to gameboards, and more particularly to games of chance. The object of the game
is to obtain as much wealth or money as possible, the player having the greatest
amount of wealth at the end of the game after a certain predetermined number of
circuits of the board have been made being the winner.
"Das/L'Original" contains the original version of this game
with original board and instructions. However "Das/L'Original" also
contains a modern version of this old economy game with instructions and
board."
With this game people in Europe for the first time got
aquainted with the history of the "famous game"! Both the
text and the sketches of the original patent were inserted in each of the
instructions of the game showing clearly that Lizzie J.Magie already played
MONOPOLY in 1904! (See also "Early
Game History - 1903 to 1936").
The differences between the rules of the original and nowadays game are very
interesting:
| The 22 properties are not build on but rented, let out and sold. |
| The estates in the original game have no names but they have in the
"modern version". |
| When an other player lands on an estate you rent he has to pay
rent. Should another lands on that same property he has to pay half of the
rent to the leaseholder and the other half to the other player! |
| When you are the owner of 2 adjacent properties the rent triples.
With 3 adjacent properties you earn 4 times the rent for that property. |
| There are no Chance nor Community Chest cards but fields where Taxes
for Absolute Necessities have to be payed. |
| The 4 stations are not at all lucrative properties. On the contrary,
one has to pay $ 5 each visit! |
| GO is called Mother Earth. When you land on or pass by this
beginning-point you'll receive $ 100, because you are supposed to have
performed so much labor upon mother earth for which you receive your wages! |
| You pay $50 to the "Public treasury" on the Luxury spaces,
receiving in return a luxury ticket, which counts you $ 60 at the end of the
game. |
| To get out of Jail one paid $ 50 as well 90 years ago! |
| For the light and water franchise you pay but $ 5,
regardless of the number of eyes you have thrown! |
| If at any time a player has no money nor properties he must go to the poorhouse
(= the Free Parking space) untill he will be able to finish his round. |
| There is a Legacy space where a player get $ 100 cash and a
legacy-ticket with a value of $ 50 at the end of the game. |
| A player may borrow from the Bank in amounts of $ 100 of which he only
receives $ 90! Besides he pays $ 5 for each bank mortgage every time
he receives his wages (= passing over Mother Earth). |
| One player may borrow from another. However, these individual mortgages
are limited to $ 50 each. |
| With the OIL version of the game players can buy drilling rigs,
after it is prooven that there is oil indeed! The player who lands on such a
property pays 10 times the rent! |
The colors of the spaces have the following meaning:
GREEN = estate
GREY = station
YELLOW = light and water franchises
LIGHT BLUE = tax for absolute necessities
DARK BLUE = luxuries
YELLOW with
black rim = legacy
RED = No trespassing - Go to jail
The six spaces in the centre of the board are respectively for:
| Property cards |
| Charters |
| Luxuries |
| Bank mortgages |
| Individual mortgages |
| Legacies |
The 4 tokens are aggravation pawns. Of the black pawns are 22 pieces
as drilling rigs. The money consists of simple notes with a value
mention of 1 - 5 - 10 50 or 100.

Standard, Réf. 06951F892
Publisher: Parker/Kenner Parker France - 1992
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
This is a set of the Irish works, so with on the lid the fourth side of
the gameboard showing the collection of attributes on a green
background. On the bottom of the box is the well-known colorpicture
of the laughing family that is looking to each other rather then to the game!
The gameboard's back is red,
like the insert of the innerbox. The back side of the Chance cards is
printed with a red ?, while the Caisse de Communauté
cards show the blue treasure chest. The banknotes
are of class B, i.a. Monopoly money in white print on colored background. The 10
tokens are of heavy metal and "made in China". The green
plastic houses do have a chimney, the red
hotels don't.
The price of this set amounted to Ffr 159,- (= US$ 24.-) in November 1994.
Edition:
Small box - Voyage, Réf. 06951F892
Publisher: Parker/Kenner Parker France - 1992
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
An unusual large sized set for a "travel edition", but yet the lid
says so!
Also this "small box"-edition comes from the Irish works
having the fourth sideof the gameboard on the lid, showing also the collection
of attributes, who however differs from the one on the Standard box! The
collection of attributes is now grouped around a blue
pawn while the background is blue as well.
The back side of the Chance cards is
printed with a red ?, while the Caisse de Communauté
cards show the blue treasure chest.
The double folded gameboard now has a red
back as well. The word MONOPOLY is again diagonal over the board and in the red
bar!
The money and the houses and hotels are the same as of the
Standard edition, however the 6 tokens are mere simple plastic pawns.
Edition: Monopoly -
Edition Collectioneurs
Publisher: Franklin Mint - 1992
Dimensions of the table: 7.5 x 52.5 x 52.5 cm + pedestal
The game:
Without exaggeration this "authorized" issue can be called the game
of the games. The board is made of distinguished mahogany
stained hardwood with a green felt-lined
sunken midfield. The printing is in gold. Underneath the playfield is a sliding
drawer for the banker, also green felt-lined.
The drawer has a knob provided with a brass MONOPLY game coin. On the other 3
sides of the set is a brass MONOPOLY plate!
The background of the streets is of the same mahogany
color as the timber. Even the instructions and the "Real Estate
Portfolio" are in this dignified color!
All 10 classic playing tokens are crafted in pewter and embellished with 22
carat gold, amongst them a purse and a hurrycane latern.
The architecturally-designed houses and hotels are dycast
and plated with silver and gold.
Also the banknotes
have a luxury appearance and are special made for this Collector's Edition. The
number of banknotes is twice as much as usual. However, there can but 4 players
be seated around the table!
The red Chance and yellow
Community Chest cards have all funny illustrations with Uncle
Pennybags, as usual.
The wooden pedestal for this set contains another 4 drawers for the players to
collect their money and property cards. Finally the set can be covered by a glass
plate, to protect for dust.
The summer-1999-edition of the Franklin Mint catalogue shows that the
French set is still available! Only this French catalogue also says that these
sets are manufactured in Malaysia.
Prices are:
| game Ffr 3950 (= US$ 640.-) |
| pedestal Ffr 2600 (= US$ 420.-) |
| glass cover Ffr 690 (=US$ 112.-) |
| and now also socalled "Millionaire's Chairs" for a paltry
sum of
Ffr 1900 (=US$ 308.-) per pair! |
| Should you have got some money left you might buy an "Official
MONOPOLY-clock fo" at the price of Ffr 1200
(=US$
194.-)! |
Edition: Monopoly
Deluxe, Réf. 14167101
Publisher: Parker Bros./Tonka/Hasbro France S.A. - 1993
Dimensions of the box: 26.9 x 26.9 x 8.4 cm
The game:
This is indeed a very luxury and sound issue of the game.
On the lid is a picture that has great resemblance with the one of the standard
issues with ref.number 06951, but still deviating: Besides the 3
"gold" tokens (boat, hat and car) the stack of banknotes with high
values is striking. Furthermore some property cards, one house and one hotel are
put on a part of the 4th side of the gameboard.
The sound gameboard has a back back and is folded twice. It is situated on a very
practical insert of hard black plastic, in which besides the 7 holes for
the banknotes, 2 for the hotels and houses also is one in which the banker's
property cards can be placed upright. There are 11 "gold" tokens,
amongst which the locomotive.
The Chance cards have a red
back with ? and the Caisse de
Communauté cards a blue back with treasure chest. There
are twice as many banknotes, as happen more often with special editions
of Monopoly.
The notes are of the new design, this means a.o.
without any mention of copyright and with 3x a mention of the value. The green
houses and red hotels are made of nice
glossy wood.
One glance on the picture at the bottom of the box shows what is described above!
The set is "fabriqué en Irlande".
Edition:
Monopoly - Edition Braille
Publisher: Parker/Tonka - 1995
Dimensions of the box: 51,5 x 51,5 x 8 cm
The game:
Like in America and England France also has its own version for the blind and
the partial-sighted. The standard edition Réf.06951F892
is used for this issue.
The game is in a plain white box that only shows the red
Monopoly bar. The gameboard of this set is provided with a raised hard
plastic surface, which is embossed with the braille letters and holes for the
tokens, houses and hotels. Also the arrow at Départ, the treasure chest and ?
are raised.
There are 2 plastic holders for the Chance and Caisse de Communauté cards to
keep them together. Because of the rigid board the box became clumsy large. The red
plastic "banker's tray" of the original box is now used for this set.
The banknotes are of class B, i.a. Monopoly money in white print on
colored background. They are made identifiable by cutting of corners in various
combinations!
The Chance
and Caisse de Communauté cards are bi-lingual, viz. French en
Braille! There are two sets of property cards:
1x excusively in braille and
1x the common cards in which the text is put in braille as well.
The 10 metal tokens as well as the green
houses and red hotels are
those of the standard edition of 1992.
The white dice are extra large and provided with black raised dots
instead of hollow pips. They are exactly the same as those of the English
edition for the blind.
The Rules are also executed in double: 1x in Braille and 1x in large print.

Edition: Gold
box, Edition 60-ème Anniversaire, Réf.44020
Edition Limitée
Publisher: Parker/Tonka/Hasbro France S.A. - 1995
Dimensions of the box: 11.5 x 29.8 x 29.8 cm
The game:
This anniversary edition is even more sophisticated than the 1985 tin!
The gold-colored box shows a nice illustration of a diamond on
a green background, with on top the red
Monopoly bar with Oncle Riche, not only on the lid but on all its flanks and
those of the white innerbox as well. In a ribbon says "1935 Edition 60ème
Anniversaire 1995".
The folded in four gameboard has a black back and a marble-colored
play side. On the play side is a sticker with a number of this
"limited edition".
The content of the high innerbox consists of 2 levels, viz.:
- A high insert of black plastic with 5 holes. Two of them contain a
nice black holder for the Chance- and Caisse de
Communauté cards, which have to be placed on the concerning spaces of
the gameboard. A round whole is for Oncle Riche's black hat that is
used to throw the (black) dice in this game! The remaining
holes are for the cards, the green
wooden houses and red hotels.
- On top of the high insert is the socalled banker's tray that on
it's turn fits in a cardboard holder. Besides 7 holes for the
banknotes this tray also contains a space for the property cards and 2 for
the houses and hotels.
The pink
Chance- and blue
Caisse de Communauté cards are on the text side
nicely illustrated with text related pictures of Oncle Riche on the same
marble-colored background as of the gameboard!
Like this the text of the distinguished property deeds is printed on that
beautiful background.
The 7 large sized banknotes (dimensions 62 x 120 mm) have been
printed on white paper and illustrated with drawn pictures of (presumable)
ancient Atlantic City buildings. The colors of these banknotes are resp.: Fr 100 (grey
blue) - 500 (red) - 1.000
(brown) - 2.000 (green)
- 5.000 (blue green) - 10.000 (orange)
and 50.000 (purple).
The 8 tokens of heavy metal are bronze-colored. Seven of these tokens are
reproductions of ancient models, viz.: the bathtub - tramcar - candle -
shoe - elephant - beaker and antique car, whereas the nice token of Oncle Riche
is added as a special!
The yellow paper printed Rules are
also richly illustrated with pictures of Oncle Riche.
The bottom of the box shows a nice color picture showing most of what has been
described.
This edition was manufactured in .... Great Britain.
Edition: Standard,
Réf. 14535101
Publisher: Parker/Tonka/Hasbro France S.A.- 1996
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 40.3 x 5.3 cm
of the double folded board: 25.2 x 25.2 cm
The game:
This edition is a sample of the "new look" of the games who are
manufactured in the Irish works! Striking are the new
dimensions of the box. Hasbro told this is because of standardization of the
sizes of all of their games. So herewith the long box we called standard so far disappears!
This new box contains a red plastic tray
insert with newly shaped slots for the banknotes and title cards of the banker.
The board is folded in four like in the so-called "small box".
The back side is red and the play side is blue
green. The set is manufactured in Ireland and so it has again a
picture of a laughing family at the back of the box.
On the board
are the nice Chance- and Caisse de Communauté cards of this game.
The banknotes are of the new model, i.e. with a black MONOPOLY ribbon
and Oncle Riche in the upper part of the circle and at the bottom, almost
unvisible, the remark "1996 Tonka Corporation".
The 10 tokens are of pewter and likely no longer manufactured in China!
The green, plastic houses do have a
chimney, the red hotels don't!
The price of this set amounted to Ffr 150.- (= US$ 24.-) in May 1999.
Edition: Monopoly -
Edition DELUXE, Réf. 14549101
Publisher: Parker Bros./Hasbro France S.A. - 1996
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 40.3 x 8.8 cm
of the double folded board: 25.2 x 25.2 cm
The game:
Again a great issue of "the famous party game". The box has the same
length and width sizes as the one of the "standard" edition, in
contrast to the American Deluxe edition, of which the box is still long!
Unfortunately both these boxes are rather vulnerable, but the content is well
taken care of: In the box are, besides the solid game board (with dark
blue back) a soft plastic insert with 4 trays for the houses and
hotels, but in particular the never before used "Banker's Tray",
a well shaped money-and cards-holder of solid blue
plastic. You have to put the separate stickers on both this tray as well as the
2 separate card holders (for the Chance- and Caisse
de Communauté cards) yourself! The
clear color picture at the bottom of the box gives a good total impression of
the set.
This time the lid shows the third side of the game board, on which 2
of the 10 gold colored tokens are to be seen! The houses and hotels
are made of nice glossy timber. The banknotes are the same as those
of the "standard" edition.
The price of this set amounted to Ffr 249,- (= US$ 35.-) in June 2000.
