It was just in 1991 that the first issues of Junior Monopoly sets came on the

Just like in the regular Monopoly game the aim is to collect as much money as
possible. At the moment one of the players runs out of money the other players
must count up their money to see who has won the game.
Four children can play at the same time, because there are 4 cars,
respectively yellow, red,
blue and green.
The ticket booths are to be distributed amongst the players with the same
color of car.
The game "takes place in a children's favourite univers: a splendid fun
fair" and will be over in about 20 minutes. Oncle Riche brings you to
the roller coaster, magic show, water chute, dodgems, puppet show, miniature
golf, a.s.o. In the coarse of the game ticket booths can be bought to place on
an Amusement so that it becomes your property. If you also own the other
Amusement of the same color, you must pay double the amount shown on the space.
|
The back of the board is blue. The gameboard in folded vertically.
|
|
The insert of the innerbox is of blue
plastic, showing Junior Monopoly in relief. It contains 5 sloping holes
for the banknotes, 1 hole fore the die(!), 1 hole for the 4 cars and finally
another 4 holes for the ticket booths. |
|
On
the bottom of the box is a black and white picture of the board and all
attributes. |
|
The money consists of colored notes printed in black with Oncle
Riche in various different situations. The 5 denominations are resp. 1
- 2 -
3
- 4 and 5. The
banknotes also mention "©1990 Parker Brothers". |
There are 6 Chance- spaces where cards can be drawn with instructions
like "Allez sur la case toboggan à eau" (Go to the water
chute) and
"Payez 3 francs pour prendre le tramway qui conduit au jardin d'enfants"
(in the English version: "Pay 3.- to take the tram to the cafe").
The dimensions of the tickets are: 55 x 84 mm.
The game was manufactured in France.
Edition: Junior, standard, French, Réf. 5415F
Publisher: Parker Bros./Tonka France S.A. - 1992
Dimensions of the box: 24.5 x 48.5 cm
The game:
The gameboard of this edition shows in it's Départ space "©Tonka Corporation
1991" as well as the ref.number 5415F, while the rim of the lid says "©Tonka Corporation 1992".
|
The most striking is however that this issue was made in Ireland. |
|
The only other difference is that the fold of the gameboard is horizontal. |
For the rest this edition is exactly equal to that of the one manufactured in
France in 1991.
Edition:
Dice Game,
Réf. 14087F
Publisher: Parker/Tonka France S.A. - 1992
Dimensions of the box: 3 x 14.3 x 17.3 cm
The game:
The dark green play box fits in a solid
overbox. The lid contains the gameboard, consisting of just squares in the
colors of the streets, 4 spaces with an engine and for the rest 1 for Water
Works, 1 for Electric Company, 1 for the Jail, 1 for "Go to Jail" and
a red arrow.
In the other section are 10 dice, a score pad and a pencil. On the dice are
except for the numbers 50 - 100 - 150 - 200 - 250 and 500 the other elements of
the game including the red arrow.
The object of the game is to be first to reach the point score decided
beforehand. On your turn, throw all the dice as many times as you wish to get as
many "streets" of the same color and so get the highest score you can.
However, if you throw all three "Go to Jail" dice, your turn ends and
you lose all the points for that turn!
A nice and handy version for on a journey! Made in Ireland.

Het spel:
The great differences between this variant and those of 1991 and '92 are:
|
A somewhat larger box and gameboard. |
|
A totally new illustration on the lid: Oncle Riche runs (now
with another group of children) over the fourth side of the gameboard. |
|
On the bottom of the box is a color picture of 2 girls and a boy
sitting around the gameboard. |
|
The blue plastic insert of the
innerbox do not show Junior Monopoly in relief any longer.
On the contrary there are numbers with the holes for the banknotes. |
|

notes are printed on white paper (without any reference to a ©) in the
colors: 1

"Les bons voyages"
Publisher: Parker/Tonka/Hasbro France S.A. - 1994
Dimensions of the case: 5 x 12 x 18 cm
The game:
In this French issue of Monopoly the streets are of course again those of Paris.
On the red outer cardboard box is
a clear picture of the inside of this red
case.
This variant is a well-reflected and practical travelling companion indeed. The tokens
can be fixed on each space but not more than just one. That means that the next
player landing on the same street has to move one step ahead! Only
on the corners is sufficient space for 4 players to stay. There are also 4 holes
per street for the houses and hotels.
There are no Chance nor Community Chest cards. Instead three
dice have to be thrown and the instruction mentioned in the table with the
corresponding number to be carried out. Instead of a free ticket to leave Jail
you get one of the 6 keys.
For the rest all Rules are the same as those of the regular edition.
These red cases are manufactured in China.
Suitable for children from age 8.
The price of this set amounted to Ffr 79.- (€ 11,80) in May 1999.

Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 26.8 cm
The game:
The differences between this variant and those of earlier years are striking, i.e.:
|
A total new square box. |
|
A new picture on the lid: Children in a car on the roller coaster with
2
jumping dolfins in the background. |
|
The color picture on the bottom side of the box shows again a
scene of two
new girls and a boy. |
|
The gameboard is oblong now: 25 x 50.5 cm. |
|
The board's back is red as the plastic
insert of the innerbox is. |
|
The money is the same as that of the set from 1994. |
|
The Chance-cards became much smaller: 43 x 63 mm. |
The price of this set amounted to Bfr 890 (€ 22,20) in Augustus 1997.
Edition: Monopoly
- Version du jeu en chocolat
Publisher: Bonbon Buddies-UK/Hasbro Inc. - 1997
Dimensions of the box: 4.5 x 15 x 30 cm
The game:
This is an interesting and edible variant of Monopoly, manufactured by
the English firm Oakwood Close in Crumlin.
On the small board of 30 x 30 cm are but 4 x 2 streets of Paris,
who are on the wrong sides for that matter, namely:
red: Avenue Henri-Martin and the
Boulevard Malesherbes
yellow: Place de la Bourse and the Rue
Lafayette
green: Avenue Foch and the Boulevard des
Capucines
dark blue: Avenue des Champs Élysées and
the Rue de la Paix.
Of the stations there are but the Gare du Nord and the Gare de Lyon. There
are also the Compagnie de Distribution d'Electricité and Compagnie de
Distribution des Eaux. There are but 10 Chance- and 10 Caisse de
Communauté cards, but unfortunately they cannot be eaten.
There are 6 (flat) chocolate tokens as well as 16 green
houses and 8 red hotels as edible
sweets.
After you've built 2 houses on your property you are allowed to build
already such a delicious hotel on. There are 5 banknotes, dim. 9 x
4 cm, but these again are not edible.
This set was bought in Belgium in December 1998.
Edition: Monopoly -
Jeu de Cartes, Réf. 19624101
Publisher: Parker/Hasbro Inc. - 1997
Dimensions of the box: 2.5 x 9.5 x 13.3 cm
The game:
Although the rules do not say so this game resembles very much Happy Families,
because the object is to collect Monopolies out of one of the well-known streets
plus 1 or 2 adjacent spaces like Chance, Community Chest, Water Works or
Electric Company. Also all 4 stations and the 4 Corners make a monopoly.
A band along the bottom edge the small board (17.2 x 17.2 cm), supplied
as a puzzle of 4 pieces, having the same color as the adjacent streets shows
which 4 spaces make a monopoly. At the start of this game for max. 4 players
each receives 4 cards, the remaining cards are placed in the centre of the game
board. The one who is on turn draws as many cards as necessary to bring his hand
up to a total of 5. Next he/she must place a card along side the edge of the
board, to the corresponding color. The player who adds the fourth card to a
color makes the monopoly and put it face down in front of him.
There is no money, nor are there houses or hotels but the
monopolies have
a certain value in points, running from 1 to 8. At the end of each round
the number of points of each player are added. If no one has reached 50
points another round has to be played.
It is remarkable that this French game is "Fabriqué en Allemagne"
(Germany).
The price of this set amounted to Ffr 49 (€ 7,50) in July 1998.
Edition:
Monopoly Electronique, Réf. 40762
Publisher: Parker/Hasbro - 1999
Dimensions of the instrument: 10 x 20 cm
The game:
This hand-held little computer in the French issue, so with the streets of
Paris, is a handy edition for the fervent Monopoly player. The clear screen is
in the centre of the gameboard and the operation keys are on both sides of this.
The blister packing shows already:
|
With 5 speaking opponents |
|
Contains more than 400 words, sound effects and music |
The game can be played in different levels.
Edition: 00009
as Promotion edition, b.c. 001865
Publisher/Importer: Hasbro/J&H
Inter'l - Brussels - 2002
Dimensions of the little box: 18.0 x 27.0 x 3.8 cm
of the little game board: 29.6 x 29.6 cm
The game:
Sometimes a game follows strange ways to reach the market, a sample of that
being this edition:
| This mini game differs in many ways from the standard
issue,
still it is a Hasbro edition. |
|
Although it was destined for France, it wasn't made in
Ireland,
but in ..... China. |
|
It was imported by the unknown Belgian (?) company
"J&H International". |
At first sight this version seems to be a mini-edition of the standard game
with ref.nr. 00009, but that appears to be not true.
The most striking of this edition is the fact the Rules to be printed on the
bottom of the box. This is indeed very clever, because this way they
always stay with the game.
Furthermore has to be mentioned:
| the innerbox has a red, plastic
insert with 3 holes. |
| the cards and property deeds are smaller than usual, viz. 44
x 70 mm. |
| the banknotes are smaller as well, viz. 41 x 79 mm. |
| the houses and hotels
have the usual sizes. Both have overhanging roofs, however, only the houses
have a chimney. |
| the little dice, with a side of 10 mm, to be white with black
pips. |
| the tokens to be simple, colored, hollow, plastic pawns, so not
those metal tokens as shown on the lid. |
Edition:
Chocolat Monopoly, Art.nr. 7516
"Un régal de jeu de société!" (A
treat of the party game!)
Publisher: Parker/Hasbro - Gamesformotion
- 2007
Dimensions of the little box: 21.3 x 21.3 x 3.6 cm
of the little game board: 40.1 x 41.0 cm
The game:
The Dutch publisher of this delicious game went about it much more serious and
on a larger scale than the earlier mentioned English publisher. His version will
be available in many countries of (Eastern) Europe plus Australia
and New Zealand, see the chocolate
site.
The design of this box corresponds to that of the Standard edition of 2001, so
with the mahogany colored rims.
This is indeed a version not often seen! The emphasis is more on the treat
rather than the game, because all essential components to make it a real
game for monopolists are simply missing, viz.: the tokens and money,
property deeds, the Chance and Caisse de Communauté cards and finally the
houses and hotels.
However, there is a real Monopoly game board with the streets of Paris.
There are only one spinner and those delicious chocolates of Belgian manufacture
(and that stands for quality). With the spinner player decides on which street a
chocolate of the same color has to be placed. If all streets of one color (or
all stations) have all chococates they will be for the next player to
dial that color.
If a player dials a question mark a chocolate must be placed in the pool.
And then the very well known house rule will apply that the one which lands on
Free Parking will collect the whole contents of the pool.
Winner is the one which finally has collected most of the chocolates. And as if
this is not enough he/she may also have the remaining chocolates.
These uncomplicated rules are mentioned in 7 points on the bottom of the box.
To me this appears to be a pleasant way to "offer" chocolates in a
group.
Since 2006, each fall again, these games are available in the chocolate
department of big supermarkets and other chain stores in more and more (Eastern)
European countries as well as in Australia and New Zealand.
The recommended retail price of this game was at the introduction € 9,95.
