With special thanks to Pwee Keng Ho from Singapore, who is my counsellor for
issues in this region.
Still
today the British influence/protection, from ±1786 until the official
independancy declared on August 31, 1957, is noticeable in Malaysia. In these
years the Waddingtons' editions have been introduced in this
country, since about 1982/85 followed by the Parker Brothers/Hasbro
design.
Next to a number of smaller native manufacturers of very simple and cheap
Monopoly-like editions SPM, established 1976, is making very nice purely
Malay games, with a glance to the English and American designs.
Up till 2000 the spaces on the Parker/Waddingtons/Hasbro game
boards are from 6 Malay cities of which a.o. 14 properties of Kuala
Lumpur.
They are from Go onwards:
Gurney Drive (Penang)
- Community Chest (Kebajikan
Masyarakat) Jalan Chow Kit
(Kuala Lumpur) - Income Tax - Butterworth Station/Stesyen
Butterworth - Jalan Hang Jebat
(Melaka) - Chance (Cuba Nasib)
- Jalan Petaling (Kuala

Chest (Kebajikan
Masyarakat) - Ampang
(Kuala Lumpur) - Kuala Lumpur Station/Stesyen
Kuala Lumpur - Chance (Cuba Nasib) - Jalan
Bukit Bintang (Kuala Lumpur) - VIP TAX and Jalan
Sultan Ismail (Kuala Lumpur).
Parker Brothers is used to keep the names of the properties unchanged, so it
is very remarkable to see they did change them for their Malayan editions:
From 2000 onwards the spaces on the Parker/Hasbro game boards
are from 7 Malay cities of which a.o. only 12 properties of Kuala Lumpur
and all 3 beige streets of Petaling Jaya.
They from Go onwards:
Gurney Drive (Penang)

$AIDINA games:
Puchong - Selangor based SPM
Syarikat Permainan (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. was established
on 26th June 1976 by Perak born inventor Ting Sie Bing.
First introduced in 1978, Saidina is a way of having fun while you aim
towards being the richest person. It is a game that helps to develop one's
business skills. It is a famous game in Malaysia and played in many homes.
Mr. Ting Sie Bing is Malaysia's Master of the Game. His fortune is
founded in developing local versions of established games.
Monopoly, where players wheel and deal using British pounds, invest in
fashionable Mayfair, buy into Piccadilly and the British Electricity Board and
commute via the tube at Marylbone and Fenchurch, is, he figures, "a
leftover from the colonial era."
So he has introduced the Malay equivalent and called it Saidina. The
objective of the game is still "to develop your business power", but
deals are made in Malaysian ringgit, prime property is in Kuala Lumpur's Jalan
Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Penang's Penang Road and oil palm, rubber and pineapple
plantations are going for $1,400 a piece.
SPM is one of the largest Toys manufacturing companies in Malaysia. It
is a wholly Malaysian owned company. The raw materials used in the
manufacturing of the products are 100% Malaysian made. This provides employment
opportunities for Malaysians as well as facilitating the Malaysian economy rise
to greater heights.
Throughout its existence and from its incorporation, SPM has received tremendous
local support for its products and firmly believes in giving back to society at
large. As such, in the past years SPM contributes a substantial amount to local
charities and fund raising events. It has also supported many academic
institutions like, local schools, colleges and universities, and many government
ministry and institutions.
From the start of the company until 2007 seven Saidina editions have been
published, viz.:
| SPM 21: Saidina - Standard |
| SPM 78 : Saidina - Traveller |
| SPM 92 : Saidina - Kuala Lumpur |
| SPM 93 : Saidina - Pulau Pinang |
| SPM 94 : Saidina - Hill & Beach |
| SPM 103 : Saidina - Chinese |
| SPM 147 : Saidina - Chinese Traveller |
Features of the Saidina designed games are:
| The Mula/Start corner shows 2 black/white blocked
start/finish flags. |
| The Jail corner shows an 8-bars gate and no scoundrel. |
| The Free parking corner became a No Parking where a fine of $400
has to be paid! |
| The Go to Jail corner does not show a policeman - a very simple black
arrow seems to be sufficient. |
| There is only 1 stack of 24 cards (60x44 mm) called Keputusan/Decission.
However, most of the instructions are the same as of the Parker/Waddingtons
games. The stack is situated next to Mulat/Start and the cards are marked by
a pink question mark. |
| All 40 spaces of the board are numbered in a line alongside the centre
field of the board. |
| The groups of properties of each side have the same color, in dark
and somewhat lighter. |
| The Jabatan Bekalan Air/Water Supply space is always on place #3
and the color bar shows blue waves in a
white field. |
| The Tenaga Nasional Berhad/Electricity space is always on place #37
and the color bar shows 3 purple flashes
of lightning. |
| The 4 "station spaces" in the middle of each side, are resp. rubber
plantation - coconut plantation - oil palm plantation and pineapple
plantation. |
| All streets have one empty circle on the bottom part of the space, but for
what reason? |
| The small (60x44 mm) property deeds have the well known red
Waddingtons cards' back. |
| There are 6 different banknotes printed in color on white
paper, the denominations of which resp. are RM10
- 50 - 100
- 500 - 1,000
and 5,000, where RM (or the $-sign)
stands for Malayan ringgit. |
| The 6 tokens are small plastic squares with the characters A
up to and including F. |
| The
are 32 red houses with
little stilt legs and pointed roofs, which are characteristic of traditional
native Malayan houses. There are but 10 blue
hotels, high buildings with an impressive staircase for an entry. Most
probably a copy of one of the many high buildings of Kuala Lumpur? |
| The
small dice (sides of 11 mm) are the Chinese type, so with red
pips for the 1 and 4.

Publisher: SPM - Puchong- Malaysia - 1987
Dimensions of the box: 19.2 x 36.7 x 3.4 cm
of the game board: 35.2 x 35.5 ccm
The game:
This "traveller's" edition is most probably only a smaller version of
the standard one of code no.SPM 21, because their design looks the same.
The game is bilingual: Malayan and English.
The streets in this game are from 22 different cities.
From Mula/Start onwards the 22 cities with their streets are:
Kangar
(Jalan Kangar) - Batu
Pahat (Jalan Rahmat) - Jabatan bekalan
air (Water Supply) - Ladang getah (Rubber
plantation) - Sibu (Jalan

- Pulau Pinang (Jalan Penang)
and Kuala Lumpur (Jalan

The little game board is of strong cardboard forced folded
perpendicular to side 2 and 4, and has a structured brown
glossy back.
The innerbox has a white plastic tray with 5 holes for the
attributes.
The bottom of the box is unprinted.
Edition:
Travel Monopoly - Malaysia Edition, ref. #4027
Publisher: Parker Brothers/Tonka Corp./Waddingtons - 1992
Dimensions of the box: 22.8 x 23.0 cm
The game:
Although the lid refers to an English and Malay Rules it doesn't mean the
whole game is bilingual, it isn't.
Besides it shows the trade mark square in the lower left corner, with 2 engines,
Uncle Pennybags and the $-sign.
The double folded game board, made of thin strong
cardboard, has a light green play side and a
red back. It shows the word Monopoly in open
characters parallel to the first side. The prices of the properties are low,
viz. starting with $60 for Gurney Drive and ending with $400 for the most
expensive street. You collect $200 over Go.
The design is typical for Waddington, viz.:
|
green locomotives facing
backwards. |
|
no treasure chest on the Community Chest spaces, only a
small v in a black dot. |
|
no gold ring in the VIP Tax space, only a tiny square. |
|
the names of the streets are mentioned twice on the
property spaces of the board. This is to be better read from all sides.
Note that only on the station spaces this opportunity is used for the 2
languages.
|
The mortgage side of the property deeds is red,
as are the Community Chest cards. The Chance cards have a blue
back. Their sizes are 56x76 mm. It is remarkable to see the text on these cards
to be exclusively in English. The
rent of the unbuilt Central Market (= most expensive yellow
street) is the same as of both other streets, only £22.-.
This mistake dates from the very original American editions and was applied all
over the world, until about 2000.
The soft plastic insert of the innerbox is white and
contains 6 trays for the attributes.
The money consists of 7 banknotes, printed in color on white paper, the
white circle in the centre of the note showing "Monopoly - Registered Trade
Mark - © 1935 Parker Brothers". The denominations are: 1 - 5
- 10
- 20 -50
- 100 and 500.
The 6 tokens, made of black plastic, are: boat - dog - hat - shoe
- iron and car.
The 32 houses and 12 hotels
are hollow and made of plastic. They have overhanging roofs and excentric
chimneys.
Both dice (sides of 15 mm) are white with black pips.
On the board's midfield it says "Printed in Great
Britain" and the Rules were made in Singapore, while on the rim of the lid
it says "Made and printed for Waddingtons International Ltd.".
This set was bought in Penang in February 1996 at the price of RM 49.90
(€ 9.30)

This edition is a real promotion game for Kuala Lumpur!
In each of the 22 streets an interesting sight is mentioned, from a Zoo, to a

Except for the lid showing 10 of these landmarks, an additional paper goes with
the box, showing 12 nice pictures of f.e. the Bangunan Parliment, Genting
Highlands and the Batu Caves.
The game is bilingual: Malayan and English.

Standard - Malaysia Edition, ref. 06951-ML
Publisher: Parker/Hasbro Int./Hasbro Toy (Malaysia) - 1995
Dimensions of the box: 26.1 x 50.8 x 4.0 cm
The game:
Only 3 years after the previous issue the "official property trading board
game" got a real new look.
Although still in a long box with an overprint "Malaysia edition" in
the lower right corner of the lid, it clearly is according the Parker
Brothers design, because:
|
the engines on the station spaces are black, although
not the composed
ones from Parker. Presumably an inland engine. |
|
blue treasure chest on
the Community Chest spaces. |
|
gold ring with diamond on the VIP tax space. |
|
the names of the streets on the board's spaces are only
mentioned once. |
|
the red Monopoly bar
with Uncle Pennybags is on the lid as well as
sloping on the centre field of the game board. |
The solid game board has a red
back. Those streets of the game having as well a Malayan as well as an English
name have both names written on the spaces. The prices of the properties are
meanwhile multiplied by 10, viz. starting with RM600 for Gurney Drive and ending
with RM4,000 for the most expensive street. You collect RM2,000 over Go
now.
The mortgage side of the property deeds is white, but red
printed. The white Community Chest cards have the treasure
chest printed in blue on the back. The white
Chance cards have a question mark printed in red
on the back. Their sizes are 55x84 mm. The
rent of the unbuilt Central Market (= most expensive yellow
street) is still the same as of both other streets, only RM
220.
The thin but solid plastic insert of the innerbox is red
and contains 12 holes for the attributes. Its bottom shows a black/white
picture of the board and its attributes.
The money consists of 7 banknotes, printed in black on colored
paper, the white circle in the centre of the note showing "Monopoly ® -
Registered Trade Mark - © 1995 Hasbro International Inc. All rights
reserved.". The denominations are: 10 - 50
- 100 - 200
-500 - 1000
and 5000.
The 10 metal tokens ("Made in China") are: ship - car -
wheel-barrow - hat - thimble - canon - shoe - iron - dog and
rider-on-rearing-horse.
The 32 houses and 12 hotels
are hollow and made of plastic. The roofs have tiles and a central chimney,
while the hotels also have roofedges.
Both dice (sides of 15 mm) are red
with white pips.
This edition was "Made in New Zealand".
It was bought in august 1997 at the price of RM 69,90 (€ 13,-)
Edition:
$aidina - Chinese edition, code no: SPM103
"A Game that develops your Business Power"
Publisher: SPM - Puchong - Malaysia -1995
Dimensions of the box: 19.0 x 36.6 cm
The game:
This edition is almost identical to the "Travel edition" with code
no. SPM 78.
Except for the fact it is in Chinese and English and it has the
same box sizes it has a few minor differences like:
| The game board is thinner and folded with its play-side outwards. |
| The board's back is grey. |
| The Chinese Rules are printed on a mahagony
colored paper. |
| Two cities are spelled slightly different:
Klang in stead of Kelang
and
Johor Bahru in stead of Johor Baru |
This set was bought in Kuala Lumpur January 1999 at the price of RM 14.95
(€ 2.80).
Edition:
$aidina - Chinese traveller edition, c. no: SPM 147
Publisher: SPM - Puchong - Malaysia - 2000
Dimensions of the box: 19.0 x 36.6 cm or smaller?
The game:
I have no idea what the difference can be between this "traveller
edition" and the set with code no. SPM103, since that one is already in the
traveller sizes and all properties are the same.
Edition:
Standard - with "Wau" token, Ref.Nr. 00009/603
Publisher: Parker Bros./Hasbro
Toy (Malaysia) - 2000
Dimensions of the box: 40.2 x 26.9 x 5.2 cm
The game:
This set is owned by Steve Amato - N.Y.C.
Wau is
Malaysian for kite-flying, a traditional competition with colorful,
artistically-constructed kites made of rice paper and bamboo. The tradition of
Wau, originally from Kelantan, including the construction and festive flight
demonstration, usually between the months of March and October, dates back
thousands of years and is handed down in families from generation to generation.
It is very striking that Parker/Hasbro has not only changed most of the spaces,
because they used to cling to originally choosen properties, but also did not
introduce their composed locomotive for the "station" spaces.
1996 Hasbro introduced new sizes for all their Standard games.
Since the year 2000 Rich Uncle Pennybags is re-named into Mr. Monopoly
wearing a red bow tie, unfortunately
not yet in this edition.
Typical for this standard issue is its presentation similar to the European
editions with ref.nr. 14535. The lid shows the fourth side of the game
board, with Go, under the red
Monopoly bar with Mr.Monopoly. Notice the white dice
show 3 and 6. However, the color picture on the bottom of the box
shows the game board with all attributes instead of that of a laughing family
around a Monopoly board, as it is with the ref.14535 editions.
Unfortunately the newly designed white plastic banker's tray with 10
holes for the banknotes and title deeds has no prepared space for the double
folded square board like in the corresponding European boxes with
ref.nr.14535. That is why the double folded board doesn't lay tight in its box.
The light blue green game board has a
light blue back. In contrast to earlier
issues the "copyright line" is printed along side 3 rather than under
the red Monopoly bar standing sloping over
the board.
The
rent of the unbuilt Central Market (= most expensive yellow
street) is now as is ought to be, viz. slightly higher than both other streets,
in this case RM
240.
The small (45x77 mm) Community
Chest and Chance
cards are the American type, viz. illustrated with funny pictures of
Mr.Monopoly.
The money consists of 7 banknotes printed in black on colored
paper, the white circle in the centre of the note now only shows "Monopoly
® - Brand." The denominations are: 10 (white) - 50
- 100 - 200
- 500 - 1000
and 5000 RM (Malaysian
Ringgit)
The tokens are those 10 well-known metal ones: ship - car - wheel-barrow
- hat - thimble - canon - shoe - iron - dog - rider-on-rearing-horse plus the
special one: the wau.
The hollow houses and hotels
are made of plastic, the roofs of which have tiles and a central chimney,
while the hotels also have roofedges.
The dice are white with black pips.
The set was "Made in China".

Publisher: Hee Trading Co - Butterworth - Malaysia - 2000
Dimensions of the box: 14.2 x 23.0 x 2.2 cm
of the unfolded "board": 35.5 x 38.0 cm
The game:
This edition is trilingual: Malayan - Chinese and English, although the
Rules are only in Malayan and Chinese.
Like all of these small inland made games the boxes and its contents are very
poor, although the print quality is good. The box opens on the small side.
Both sides of this box show a "Great Rich Man" (compare with Parker's
"Rich uncle Pennybags") in front of the Malaysian flag, on the Chinese
side bearing a white jacket and on the Malaysian side a black jacket.
Note that the white dice in the green oval
show 5 and 4.
Why may one say a Juteria to be an imitation Monopoly game?
Looking to this edition it is because:
The
spaces on the paper game board are from Mula/"Start from here"
onwards:
Mc Donald (1) - Fate
- KFC (2) - Income Tax Paid - Lapangan
terbang (airport) bayan lepas Pulau Pinang (3)
- Jabatan Bekalan Air (4) - Chance

The game board's midfield shows the Petronas Twin Towers
of Kuala Lumpur, as well as those 2 other landmarks: KL Tower
and the airport's Control Tower.
The property deeds are all on one white paper sheet, printed in red,
with a big light blue block on the mortgage
side.
Each set of 15 Fate
and Chance cards is also printed on one
sheet of colored paper the back sides of which show a star pattern.
The money consist of Millionaire banknotes all printed in color on 2
sheets of white paper in 7 denominations 10 - 50 - 100 - 200 - 500 - 1000
and 5000 dollars (Design & Created By: Ooi Yan Hee
Trading as Hee Trading Co. 2000).
The set has but 4 hollow plastic chess pawns for tokens.
Both small dice (sides of 10 mm) are white with black pips except
for the large red dot and a red
4 pips.

Publisher: Yan Hee Trading Sdn.Bhd. - ±2001
Dimensions of the box: 14.7 x 21.2 x 2.0 cm
of the unfolded "board": 34.5 x 37.4 cm
The game:
This Billionaire edition is a "brother" issue of the Millionaire
set with a lower bar code number and from the same manufacturer. It is almost a
copy except for the prices being multiplied by a factor 10.
Other differences in design are:
| The pictures on the box are turned for a quarter. Funny to
note that the "Great Rich Man" now has a pink
bow tie,
whereas his American counterpart, Mr. Monopoly, is
wearing a red one since 2000. |
| The lines surrounding the spaces of the game board
are dark blue, while those of the
Millionaire are light brown. |
| Manufacturer's name is written underneath the picture in the centre of the
board. |
| Of course the banknotes are now "The Billionaire Notes"
from the "United State of Billionaire". They do show the
name
of Yan Hee, however without mentioning a year. |
| In this set is a note for "a gift set which contain 12
pieces of free Name Card (Actual Price: RM 3.00).
...You need to pay RM 1.0 as postage. ..." |
This edition was "Buatan Malaysia" (Made

Edition:

Tanda-tanda besar (large characters)
Publisher: Unknown manufacturer - ±2002
Dimensions of the box: 14.5 x 23.0 x 2.3 cm
of the unfolded "board": 35 x 35 cm
The game:
This slightly larger game box looks very similar to the earlier described one
with bar code ref., reason to assume it comes from the same manufacturer.
(The "mystery gift" is in this set a tiny plastic sheet (4x5 cm) to
compose a space shuttle of.)
Both the lid and the bottom show again the "bald, fat, rich man waving with
banknotes" and bearing a purple jacket
this time. The Petronas Twin Towers of Kuala Lumpur are now shown on the

is also shown on the box. The box opens on the left longer side and the lid is
one whole with the bottom part.
This edition is trilingual: Malayan - Chinese and English and the Rules
are now in English as well. However, some strange words are used, like:
| wheel shaft = die |
| scoring card = banknote |
| substitude = token |

gift!

Publisher: Unknown manufacturer - ±2002
Dimensions of the box: 18.2 x 15.2 x 3.8 cm
of the unfolded "board": 38.0 x 38.3 cm
The game:
Although the design and presentation of this edition has great resemblance with
those of the other editions described there is no reason to believe this set to
be made by one of their manufacturers. The "Great Rich Man" in this
edition looks like an Austrian Tiroler man without beard, but with a handful of
American dollars.
This edition is trilingual: Malayan - Chinese and English, but the Rules
are only in Malayan and Chinese.
Both sides of this little box show a collage of pictures of the landmarks
mentioned on the game board.
The properties are 28 countries each represented by a picture of a
landmark. It is funny to see that the designer apparently don't know the country
France, only it's capital Paris. Another "new" country seems to be
Afrika. The game starts with Malaysia, followed by its neighbour city Singapore.
