Soon after the introduction of the Monopoly game in America in 1935 Damm
company introduced the Monopol editions in Norway, based on the Matador games from Danmark and
Iceland, where the properties are in a circle instead of a square. However, somewhat
later they continued making those games but changed the name in Millionær.
From 1961, the year Parker (later Hasbro) had revoked
all their representations, they started manufacturing and distributing their
very uniform editions themselves. Typical of these editions are a.o. the
black engines on the stations, the blue treasure chests
on the Community Chest spaces and the gold ring on the "Extra
Tax" space.
It is hard to determine the age of the first two games mentioned and where
their design comes from.
The games only mention Damm company as the publisher of these editions,
referring to N.W.Damm & Søn, a publishing house founded in 1843 in
Olso by Niels Wilhelm Damm. It was taken over by the Danish media group Egmont
in 1984.
Damm must have maintained some kind of relations with the games manufacturer Waddington
- UK and/or with the games distributors in the neighboring countries Denmark and
Sweden, because they all apply a circular distribution of the properties
in a "monopoly-like" game but yet under the name Monopol, a name
copyrighted by Parker Brothers in America in 1935 for their so well known
"Property trading game" with the distribution of the properties in
a square.
The oldest known reference to a game with circular distribution is an advertisement
in an Icelandic newspaper of Dec.28, 1939 (see chapter Iceland), in which
the game is referred to as Miljóner (Matador).
In all Scandinavian countries these games have been published between
±1937 till shortly after WW II.
Comparing these 2 early Norwegian editions to eachother as well as to the early
editions of the other Scandinavian countries and Iceland it is resoneable to suppose game
(1) to be from ±1937 and game (2) from ±1950.

Seeing
the uniformity
of the names of
the properties in the
different game
boards
it must surely
mean that
during all these
years,
even after Hasbro
has revoked its agreements
in the 80's
with most of its distributors,
there still is a special
bond between
Damm /Egmont
and Hasbro.
Edition: Monopol
- small box with separate game board (1)
Publisher: N.W.DAMM & SØN - Oslo - ±1937
Dimensions of the box: 17.2 x 20.0 x
3.2 cm
of the game board: 49.5 x 48.7 cm
The game:
This edition as well as the next one are both from the collection of David
Miller - UK. They are those very early editions consisting of a small box
for all accessories with a long, separate game board.
That what is immediately obvious in these games:
 | The circular distribution of the properties over the game board
with a numbering
in the inner circle of all 40 spaces. |
 | The illustration on the small box showing a scenery of a harbor through
the
windows of a shipping company's office. |
 | One of the words Monopol in the red
circle in the board's center is perpendicular to the Start corner and the
other is parallel
to the Start space. |
 | Contrary
to the fact what happened with the
yellow streets all over the world from the start
with Parker Brothers in 1935 till about 1980,
viz. the rent on the unbuilt most expensive
street to be the same as that of the other 2
has not been copied by the Damm company for their Monopol games!
This is very exceptional! See: http://www.muurkrant.nl/monopoly/print_and_production_mistakes.htm |
 | There is only 1 kind of cards, viz. Prøv Lykken cards. The only space
on the board, reserved for the stock cards is called
Sjansekort, positioned on top the spaces 33-37 of the board. |
 | The 6 very different metal tokens compared to those from Parker/Hasbro
are: cup - horse - cow - sailing boat -
cross-country skier and a milk boy. |
 | The well-known stations are replaced by shipping lines, although
there railways in Norway as well. |
 | The 6 banknotes
are of Damm design, so without little engines and houses.
Their nominations are: 10
- 50 - 100
- 500 - 1000
and 5000 (on white paper). |
 | The Rules are printed
on a white paper; only the "spillet inneholder" (content
of the game) is listed inside the lid.
|
Typical for this
edition are:
 | Your "salary" over Start is
still 2000 Kr(onor). |
 | The Prøv Lykken cards
are large orange cards showing a
weave to it, size: 82x43 mm. One of them reads:
"Hunden Deres har overfalt mjelkegutten. Betal for tort og skade 100
kroner."
(Your dog have attacked the milk boy. Pay for pain and damage 100
kroner.) |
 | The Parker/Hasbro banknotes |
 | The blue-green houses and red
hotels are made of wood but apparently not cut with a fine blade. See the
rough edges and
coars grain. |
 | The end of the Rules show the companies' address at that time: N.W.Damm & Søn
Øvre Slottsgate 6
Oslo
followed by the note: "Nye
pengesedler leveres à Kr.1.-- pr.set."
(We can supply a new set of banknotes for Kr.1.- per
set.)
|
The price of this set amounted to US$ 208.- November 2007.
Edition: Monopol
- small box with separate game board (2)
Publisher: N.W.DAMM & SØN -Oslo - ±1950
Dimensions of the box: 17.2 x 20.2 x
3.2 cm
of the game board: 49.5 x 48.7 cm
The game:
Except from the different notations of a few properties (see above) this edition
from about 15 years later is almost unchanged against version (1).

Typical for this edition are:
 | Your salary over
Start still is 2000 Kr. |
 | The Prøv Lykken cards
are smooth large orange cards of
different size: 80x48 mm. |
 | The blue-green houses and red
hotels
are made of wood, but this time they are slightly different in size
and
the surfaces are smoother. |
 | The metal tokens of this set are more gleaming than those of set
(1). |
Edition: Standard
long box,
ref. 77314, art.nr. 92110/10
Publisher: Parker Brothers - ca. 1968
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
This edition is probably the first one according to the Parker design in
Norway since Parker took manufacturing and distribution outside the USA in their own hands.
Recognize that there are 2 kinds of cards now, viz.: the pink Prøv
Lykken
and lightblue Sjanse cards, with the "locomotive-pattern" on their
back, while the early Monopol and the actual Millionær editions only apply Prøv
Lykken cards stacked on a Sjanse field.
The lid of the white box shows the game board on the left in a green
and blue square. Under the red
Monopol bar is Rich Uncle Pennybags in a red
square, between 2 blue engines. In the red
field the number 77314 is mentioned. In the lower left corner is the Parker
logo.
The streets and stations in the Parker/Hasbro

The fold in the board is parallel to sides 2 and 4.
On the dark green centrefield of the board
is the word Monopol in black characters (without frame), parallel to the
first side. The back side of the gameboard is blue.
The execution of the gameboard, with the blue
treasure chest on the Prøv Lykken field, the ring on the Luksus Skatt field and
the black locomotive on the stations, is according to Parker Brothers (not
Waddingtons).
The innerbox contains but one red
plastic insert with 13 holes in total for the banker. The one sided
printed banknotes are Monopoly money, "pat.app.for No 3796-36".
The dimentions of the attributes are of the:
 | banknotes: 49 x 95 mm |
 | property cards: 55 x 85 mm |
 | Prøv Lykken en Sjansekort: 55 x 84 mm |
The 8 metal tokens are resp. hat, shoe, iron, thimble, car, dog,

Edition: Millionær
long box,
ref.nr. 11010 (1)
Publisher: Egmont Litor AS - Oslo - 1992
Dimensions of the box: 23 x 44.6 cm
The game:
Since Parker Brothers continued marketing their Monopoly game in Norway
themselfs,
Damm/Egmont continued selling their very similar game under the name of Millionær.
It may be well possible this new edition has been designed for the upcoming
wedding of Crown Prince Haakon with the middle-class girl Mette-Marit in August
2001?
Not only was the most expensive street Rådhus Plassen
replaced on the playboard by Slottsplassen but there was an additional large,
yellow castle
added to the stock of buildings, to be used as a hotel on the Slottplassen
street.

The properties are in this 1992 edition of Millionær

 |
The insert in the innerbox, the socalled "bankers tray" is of black plastic.
It has 5 holes and a money tray. |
 | The Prøv Lykken cards
are white with a blue ? on one
side, size: 91x60 mm. One of them reads:

50 000 . |

Edition: Standard
long box,
ref. 06951NO
Publisher: Parker/Hasbro Scandinavia A.S. - 1993
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
This is one of the early editions made in the Irish works, so with the fourth side of the
gameboard on the lid, showing the collection of attributes on a green
background. The bottom side of the box shows the well-known color picture of the
laughing family.
The back of the game board is red, like the
plastic insert of the innerbox.
The back of the Sjanse cards is printed
with a red ?, while the Prøv
Lykken cards are printed with the blue
treasure chest.
The banknotes are not as shown on the lid but with "Monopoli®
- Monopoly® - Monopol®" in a circle as well as the note "© 1992
Tonka Corporation".
Tje 10 tokens are of heavy metal and "made in China".
The plastic houses do have a chimney, the hotels
don't.
The price of this set amounted to Nkr 269 (€34.70) in 1997.
Edition: Standard
edition,
ref. 14535
Spillet om eiendommer og rikdom
Publisher: Parker/Tonka Corp./Hasbro Scand.A.S.-1996
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 40.3 x 5.3 cm
of the double folded board: 25.2 x 25.2 cm
The game:
Remarkable of this game are the new dimensions of the box. Hasbro advises
that this is because of "standardisation" of the shapes of their sets.
So from now on the long box we till so far called "Standard" disappears.
In this new box is one red, plastic insert
containing 7 slots for the banknotes, 10 slots for the property cards and 4
trays for the other equipment.
The board is folded in four, like in the
so called "small box". Its back is red,
the play side is blue green. The word Monopol stays in
black characters and in a frame diagonal wise over the board.
This set is made in Ireland and so it has a picture of the laughing family on
the bottom again.
Your salary at the Start corner will be Kr. 4.000.
On the game board are those nice Sjanse- and Prøv Lykken cards.
They are white with the text in a frame printed in red.
The back side of the Prøv Lykken cards is blue
with a treasure chest in a yellow
field;
those of the Sjanse cards is red with the ?
in a yellow field as well.
The property cards do not have rounded corners as a result of what they
look like slightly larger (dim.: 56 x 87 mm). The back side of these white cards
is printed red.
The banknotes are of the new model, viz. with a black ribbon with
"Monopoly with Uncle Pennybags" in the upper part of the circle and,
hardly visible, the remark "1996 Tonka Corporation" in the lower right
corner.
The 10 tokens are of pewter (without the mention "made in
China").
The green plastic houses
do have a chimney, the red hotels don't!
Both the dice are white.
This set was made in Ireland.

inwards. |
 | The insert in the innerbox, the socalled "bankers tray" is of black plastic. It
has 4 holes, one of them for the dice only, and a money tray. |
 | The Prøv Lykken cards
are white with a blue ? on one
