"Hasbro
- Waterford" is the manufacturing facility for all European Monopoly editions since Waddingtons stopped
production in
Leeds - UK in 1995.
At their site I found following short
history:
Hasbro Ireland is established in Waterford, Ireland since 1977.
The company operates from a modern production facility of 22,500 m², manufacturing Games, Playdoh products and Puzzles and
employing approx. 500 employees. It is one of Europe's biggest convertors of Board and Paper.
The company manufactures approximately 17 million units annually for export to International Markets.

The game:
This is probably one of the early Irish editions with the streets from the
capital city Dublin. Besides the railway stations are
replaced by, in
order: a busstation - airport - railwaystation and a second
airport.
This long box is published in 1972 or later, because this year is
mentioned at the end of the Rules.
The soft lid of the box is in for Waddingtons so characteristic
colors red - white - red
with the logo of "Uncle Pennybags between 2 engines and the £-sign"
in the upper red bar. In the white
section of the lid's rim is Monopoly in black characters.
The board has clearly features of the
"transition period" (~late fifties and
early seventies), such as:
 | Double names on the
property spaces, typical Waddingtons. |

Only a very small black
square on the Super Tax space, typical Waddingtons. |
| No "engine illustration" in the centre of the
board as used with the early English editions. |
| The Parker Bros. copyright 1961 is
mentioned underneath the word Monopoly in open characters. |
The cover of this edition is 5 mm
higher than the inner box. Why? The back of the board is red.
In the white soft insert are 7 holes for the attributes. The yellow
Chance- and pink Community
Chest cards are not illustrated. In contrast to the UK editions of the
same era this set only has 2 blank spare property deeds.
The rent of the unimproved O'Connell Street is the same as of both other
yellow streets, only £ 22.-. This mistake was made at the start of the American
editions and was copied for the issues of all other countries over the world
untill about 1982.
The banknotes are printed in black on thin paper the back of it being printed with the
logo of "Uncle Pennybags between 2 engines and the £-sign".

The 6 metal tokens
are resp.: boat - shoe - car - hat - dog and iron.
The plastic houses are green
and the hotels are red. Both have

It are the Rules of this edition that show as latest copyright year 1972.
Its presentation is very similar to the UK edition ref. #44021 (1).
On the red - white - red
cover (the new!) Uncle Pennybags turn up from the O of Monopoly, while the
old logo with "Uncle Pennybags between 2 engines with £-sign" is only on the rims.
Again there is a height difference between the lid and the
inner box of even 8 mm. This might be to protect the inner box?
The yellow
Chance- and pink Community
Chest cards are not illustrated. In contrast to the UK editions of the
same era this set again only has
2 blank spare property deeds.

The game:
This edition is a sample of the "new look" of the games manufactured
in the Irish works. The fresh white box shows a red
bar and a part of the fourth side of the board on the cover. The white dice show
a 3 and a 5. The width and the
length of the boxes are standardized for all of their games Hasbro told. So
herewith the long box I called Standard so far disappears.
This new box contains a red plastic tray
insert with newly shaped slots for the banknotes and title cards of the banker.
The board is folded in four like in the so-called "small box".
The back side is red and the play side is blue
green. The set is manufactured in Ireland and so it has a picture of
a "laughing family" at the back of the box. On the board are the nice Chance
and Community Chest cards of this game. The banknotes are of the
new model, i.e. with a black Monopoly banner and Uncle Pennybags in the
upper part of the circle and, almost unvisible, the remark "1996 Tonka
Corporation".
The 10 tokens are of pewter and likely no longer manufactured in
China.
The plastic houses do have a
chimney, the hotels don't.

The game:
Parker/Hasbro has standardized their games world-wide (because of what to my opinion
they become the less
interesting for collectors). Now the standard editions of all countries bear
number 9, the number for the American standard editions since the first issues
of 1935.
The design of this new game features:
| The illustration on the lid shows a somewhat cheap red
rim. |
| Only 4 spaces of the fourth side of the game board are shown in perspective with 1 house, 1 hotel, still the hat and
the racecar as well as both dice, however now with 4 and 3
(instead of 3 and 5). |
| The perspective red Monopoly bar with
the nice shadow and Mr.Monopoly with the red bow tie
(until 2000
he was Rich Uncle Pennybags), that appears on the lid, the
board game's midfield and all 4 rims of the innerbox. |
| The bottom side of the box no longer shows "the laughing
family" but almost the whole game board with all its attrubutes. |
The "banker's tray" of this "standard"
box is red again and has holes
for 7 banknotes as well as for the property deeds who are still present with the banker.
The game board is folded in four and fits, when stored,
precisely on the banker's tray. The back of the board is as usual red,
the playside is blue green.
On the board the Chance cards with red
back in a lines pattern are as usual next to the Go corner and the Community Chest
cards with blue back in a lines
pattern next to the Free Parking corner. The cards (56x87
mm) have round corners.
The property cards (56x87 mm) also have round corners.
The banknotes (52x100 mm) are printed on one side only. On top
of the circle on the note is a black ribbon showing "Monopoly with
Mr.Monopoly". At the bottom of this circle is in small characters "©2001 Hasbro
Inc.". The currency is Euro(€) and the denominations are
resp.: 1

The 10 tokens are of light metal and are the well-known: hat -
shoe - car - boat - dog - wheelbarrow - rider-on-a-horse - thimble - iron and
canon.
The houses
and hotels
are of non-transparant plastic and have all an overhanging roof with an
excentric chimney.
Both dice are white with black pips.

market City Games in Europe since 1998. First in Great
Britain followed by issues in Germany and various other countries.
It are all socalled "Authorized Opoly Games", i.e. they are
manufactured under the approval of and in cooperation with Hasbro. Like with the
American City Games a part of the profit has to come from advertisements of
local companies and institutes mentioned on the spaces. The streets prices and
those of the other properties are always the same as those of the original game
board with the streets of Dublin.
All of these editions are made according to the same pattern, viz.:

The colorfull lid always shows a composition of pictures
of landmarks of the city under the Monopoly bar, with in perspective
mid-under the first spaces at the left and right of Go. In the lower right
corner are always 6 of 10 standard tokens i.e. car, boat,
thimble, canon, wheelbarrow and rider-on-horse. The other tokens of the set
are dog, hat, shoe and iron. |

The back of all game boards is purple. |
|
The Banker's tray is a square tray of red
plastic on top of which the double folded gameboard is placed.One hole
contains a small, transparant case, presumably for the houses and hotels. |

A second, slightly higher tray of green
plastic has 7 slots to store the banknotes. |

Each set is supplied with a socalled property pouch.
According to Winning Moves it is to store the house and hotels. |
|
All well finished
plastic houses and hotels have overhanging roofs and an excentrically placed chimney. |

The dice are white and have black pips. |

The price of these games is rather high and amounted to £ 29.95
