Discover Publications (UK)

Discover Publications (Gibraltar, later International) Ltd. published a limited number of opoly-games.

Its first edition was most probably the 1996 edition Rockopoly, about Gibraltar, the last one must have been the 2000 edition Bristolopoly, because February 2004 the company was dissolved. These games have no relation whatsoever with the publishers of the regular Monopoly game Waddingtons and Hasbro.

Sponsors make possible to issue the editions. The property (Business) prices are always the same as those of the game board with the streets of London, so the cheapest Business costs £60 and the most expensive one is £400. Also the colour of their groups are about the same as of the regular Monopoly board.

All of these editions are made according to the same pattern,
  • An illustration of the concerning city on the lid with an overprint of the game board, as well as a picture on the centre of the board.
  • A player does not receive his "salary" at Start but 2 spaces later. The Business name changes depending on the City but it remains the place to collect your £200.
  • In case you land on Start you may only roll one of the dice on next turn.
  • The mid space of each side is a Star (*) Property, sponsored by a local Business. The possession of all 4 gives the highest profit.
  • The "utility spaces" are sponsored by any local Bussiness. However the two of them form one group.
  • All corners are sponsored by local Businesses, however their function is unchanged. A player can only be visiting the Party Tent or he/she can be sent to this place by drawing the card concerned.
  • There are no houses nor hotels. Instead there are 32 shops (12 mm high cylinders) and 12 superstores (look like hotels with a chimney). Both are made of plastic.
  • The 6 tokens are plastic "cylinders with ball on top".
  • Both dice are white with black pips.
  • The money consists of white banknotes, one sided printed sometimes also with the name of a sponsor. The denominations are always printed in black in a colored rhombic space : £1, £5, £10, £20, £50, £100 and £500.
  • The use of Credit Cards: At the start of the game, all players receive a Credit Card in the value of £500. At any time during the game, a player may request £500 cash which will be issued by the bank. However, each time he lands on or passes Start he must pay £ 50 interest to the bank.
  • Each individual space of a group can be mortgaged, only without building. The owner however is allowed to collect rent due and the amount owing is the same as if it were not mortgaged. When the owner passes Start he must pay interest for that mortgaged business, the amount being shown on the card.
  • There are 2 stacks of 21 cards each situated along side 1 of the game board, underneath the picture. Cards 1 are often red and Cards 2 (next to "Start here") are often blue, but their names are not always the same.
