YMCA (UK)

Since 1986 TRI-AKTIV the Oslo-N based games manufacturer produced along with the Y.M.C.A. (Young Men's Christian Association, youth hostels) in Bergen-N a board game based upon Monopoly with the aim of raising funds for that association. Local businesses took adverts on the property spaces, taking care to cover their cost thus leaving the net profits for the YMCA. This project was such a success that the YMCA decided to expand the project nationwide, then Worldwide under the Tri-Aktiv brand name. In 1992, the manufacture was transferred to the Ricken manufacturer in Viborg, Denmark.

From 1990, Tri-Aktiv continued this format in the Benelux countries. The Lyons and Rotary Clubs based in Holland developed along with local businesses and their local associations a similar game to that of the YMCA. Also in 1991, Tri-Aktiv teamed up with the YMCA in Great Britain and introduced the same successful formula that had worked so well on the continent. 19 YMCA's developed the theme. Part way through the involvement, all production was transferred to Ricken. (Some uncertainty with one game 'Sheffield' - possibly made by 'Scope')

The format of the games construction is a plastic encased outer which when unfolded double up as the playing surface and rules.  Of the 19 versions produced, 16 kept to a similar design: Green or plum background with red or green pips (Exeter has a different shade of green.) The game's title is in a bordered frame on the top surface. There is a copy of the board's playing surface printed at an angle and over the spline of the casing with next to it a small square showing the participating Y.M.C.A.

The design of 3 editions differ: Their background color is black.

The game's contents are kept in a polystyrene tray, that is removed when playing and used for the bank. All the game's contents are produced in a simple manner:
  • A pack of Share cards and a pack of New Share Quotation cards.
  • A pack of Chance Cards.
  • The money is printed double sided, usually sponsored. The value of the 5 banknotes are 1000, 500, 100, 50 and 10 pounds.
  • 6 coloured plastic cars as tokens.
  • 2 red dice with white pips.
