Classic Version 2025 - Major changes for 90th Anniversary (USA)
2025
2025 - Code: G0009
January 2025 and Hasbro has done a full refresh of the "Classic" version from bottom up permanently going from the European size box to a Square box. The change to a square box came to most versions including versions made by outside companies like Winning Moves and USAopoly.
Box
Size: 10.1 x 10.1 x 1.6 inches
The box is now square, being 2/3 as long as past editions.
The lid of the box now has more colours used and is 2D with only the "Go" square and "Boardwalk" properties shown, so you know that this version is the "Classic" version with a quick look. There is only the car token and two dice shown. At the bottom of the lid are a variety of coloured squares with like "watermark" images in the including Mr. Monopoly, The Police Officer from the board, Chance logo, Community Chest logo, the electricity bulb and Luxury tax "ring". The new Hasbro Games logo is in the bottom right. This is a lot less clutered design and will stand out more than the previous versions.
The base of the box is now blue instead of the traditional green even though the board is still green. As with most of the previous editions, most of the board is shown with just one corner missing. The rest of the image shows a possible layout of how it is played. The full set of players tokens are shown horizontally. A list of contents is shown to the leftand at the bottom is the official copyright information and dates finishing with the new Hasbro logo in the bottom right.
Looking at the sides from the top going clockwise, the top side on the lid has the Monopoly logo and 4 watermark images of Mr. Monopoly, Chance logo and Luxury Tax Ring on various colours. The top side of the main box has a smaller Monopoly logo and a "Quick Tip" saying "You can't swap or sell buildings, and there are no loans!".
The right side on the lid has the Monopoly logo and 4 watermark images of Mr. Monopoly, Chance logo and Luxury Tax Ring on various colours. The right side of the main box has a smaller Monopoly logo and a "Quick Tip" saying "You may make deals anytime, not just on your turn".
The bottom side on the lid has an even smaller Monopoly logo, the "small print" recycling information, where it is made, logos including the Monopoly Board logo, Parker Brothers logo, new Hasbro Games logo, the bar code and the code (G0009) for this version. The bottom side of the main box has a smaller Monopoly logo and a "Quick Tip" saying "Don't put money on Free Parking!".
The left side on the lid has the Monopoly logo and 4 watermark images of Mr. Monopoly, Chance logo and Luxury Tax Ring on various colours. The left side of the main box has a smaller Monopoly logo and a "Quick Tip" saying "Always auction if you land on a property but don't want to buy!".
Tokens
Welcome to more tokens with this update. They are approximately 20% bigger now than the previous versions and eight in total.
They are: Penguin, /Rubber Ducky, Dog, Cat, Hat, Thimble (we lost in 2017 to The Tyrannosaurus Rex but came back in 2024 replacing the Tyrannosaurus Rex), Money bag (from 1998 to 2008 and replaces the battleship) and the car.
Money
The money has gone through quite a change with the amount being more prominent and moved left of centre now, because to the right, Mr. Monopoly is not printed on the notes for the first time. Mr. Monopoly is hardly prominent on the lid, bottom or board so it is nice to see him being on the notes.
The smaller numbers, engine and house/hotel on the design n the front of the notes are more into the corners now. This can be seen in the comparisons further down the page.
The pink used for the 5's and the blue used for the 10's seems to be slightly more vibrant.
Title Deeds
The main change with this version is that Rhode Island Avenue replaces Oriental Avenue on the light blues.
All the title deeds have new designs (both front and back) containing the same information as the 2008 cards and are the same size as the 2003 version. This can be seen on the 2003-2018-2025 comparison page.
The back of the title deeds shows an increase in the size of the text for the Mortgage Value and the Unmortgage Cost which must make for faster reading.
Chance / Community Chest
The Chance /Community Chest cards now have rounded corners and also use 2D art.
They use the card text from pre-2021 editions (with some minor alterations). It also offers clarifications, where necessary, (all movement cards (except for "Advance to Boardwalk" ) specify to collect salary when passing Go, for example).
"You adopted a Puppy. Pay $50" replaces "Doctor's Fees. Pay $50".
"You Inherit $100" now reads "You received a mysterious inheritance. Collect $100".
"You've been elected chairman of the board" now says "chairperson of the board".
Both "Advance to the Nearest Railroad" and the "Advance to the nearest utility" now say "Advance to the next Railroad/Utility". The rest of the text is the same.
Instructions / Game Record
The instructions are in full colour and are on 3 pages instead of the 8 pages of previous editions. It is significantly easier to thumb through for quick rules clarifications.
Board
Size: 20 x 20 x 0.1 inches
With the box being square, the board is, of course, quad folded.
All symbols, apart from Go, are redrawn. Some of the symbols are more noticeable than others. Harry Moore is responsible for doing the corner spaces (Go to Jail, Free Parking and Just Visiting).
All the spaces (other than the corners) have a white chevron pattern over them, making the property names easier to see (better contrast). The railroads use a slightly darker chevron.
The logo in the centre of the board is just plain "MONOPOLY" and no Mr. Monopoly in site.
Houses, Hotels, Dice.
The houses and hotels and still made of plastic and have overhanging eaves but no longer have chimneys.
The dice are white with black pips.
The dice are made in China and the rest of the game is Made in U.S.A.
