Kenya has been a British colony between 1890 and December 12, 1963 (the day the
country became independant),so we may expect to find copies of theBritish
Monopoly game, i.e. with the board with the streets of Londen.
However, it was not until recently a very special inland made Monopoly-like
edition was found.
Edition:
Kumiliki
- standard edition (Kumiliki = Swahili for to
acquire/ownership).
The Property Game
Publisher: Blue Rhino Ltd. Kenya - ±2007
Dimensions of the box: 27 x 27 x 5.4 cm
of the unfolded board: 49 x 50 cm
The game:
It was Jacco Brouwer - NL,
owner of one of the first editions, who introduced this splendid game to me.
Shortly afterwards Todd Schaffer - Nairobi, Kenya/Orlando, Florida USA,
promoter of Original African
Paintings
and distributor for the "Blue Rhino" company is now offering these
Kumiliki board games on his website as well.
Seeing the very nice design of this game it immediately reminded
me of equally nice designs of the French company Tilsit
Éditions who a.o. was allowed to make the editions for the isles
Guadeloupe, Réunion and Martinique in licence of Hasbro.
This
first edition of both the Standard edition as well as that of the
Spoapston-edition had only the advertisement of 2 sponsors, viz. on
the former Free Parking corner (by Dormans) and one on Wilson Airport (by Air
Kenya).
The images on all typical Hasbro spaces (corners, stations and utilities) differ
from the so well known; there is f.e.an other rascal in the jail.
The whole midfield is utilized to clearly point out the splendid
landscape and the animal riches of the country.
From Endelea! Go! all properties are of the
capital Nairobi:
Kibera - Harambee - Kawangware
- Revenue Authority - Machakos Airport - Kasarani
- Bahati! - Dagoretti - Umoja
- Kamiti maximum! (Jail) - Buru
Buru - Stima Company (Electric Company) - South
'B' - South 'C' - Kenkom Bus
Station - Parklands - Harambee - Adam's
Arcade - Hurlingham - Dormans
Coffee break (this is an ad) - Westlands
- Bahati! - Kileleshwa - Kilimani
- Kenya Railways - Riverside
- Lavington
- Water Company (instead of Water Works) - Langata
South Road - Go to Kamiti! - Spring
Valley - Runda - Harambee
- Gigiri - Wilson Airport (with
ad of: Air Kenya) - Bahati! - Muthaiga
- Toa kitu kidogo and Karen.
Note of Todd Schaffer: on the 2 most expensive streets on the game board: "Muthaiga
is the area where President Mwai Kibaki resides and Karen
is where the home of Karen Blixen of the Out of Africa, "I had a
farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills..." is."
The property deeds (6x9 cm) have the same division as those of
Parker/Hasbro. Their back is printed with "Mortgaged"
and the mortgaged amount
The Harambee cards are blue green,
the Bahati! cards pink
The banknotes are from the Kumiliki Bank and the currency is in
Kenyan Shilling (Kshs). They are printed in black on colored paper in 8
denominations: 100 - 500 - 1.000 - 2.000 - 5.000 - 10.000 - 30.000 and 50.000.
The 6 tokens (ca.20 to 30 mm long) are made of soapstone, a soft
kind of stone only found in Kenya. It are: a Sandal - Elephant - Land
Cruiser - Crocodile - Lion en Rhino, stored in a Kitenge
cloth bag. (A Kitenge is a kind of textile cloth used by women as a wrap
around the chest or waist, over the head as a headscarf, or as a baby sling.)
The 32 blue houses and 12 longer yellow
hotels are made of plastic. They even have a chimney!
The English Rules mention "Board designed and produced in East
Africa", meaning in Kenia.
Both plastic dice are green with
white pips.
Edition: Kumiliki
- Soapstone edition
The Property Game
Publisher:
Blue Rhino Ltd. Kenya - ±2007
Dimensions of the box: 27 x 27 x 5.4 cm
of the unfolded board: 49 x 50 cm
The Game:
The only 2 differences between the Standard edition and the "premium"
Soapstone editon of the first edition are:
 | The midfield of the board shows the name of the game in large
characters. |
 | The hut-houses and hut-hotels are cut out of soapstone as
well, as mentioned in the Rules. It will be clear
the cutting of these huts will be very labor-intensive, reason why
this edition is more expensive than the Standard one.

Edition: Kumiliki
- Soapstone edition - 2nd edition
The Property Game
Publisher: Blue Rhino Ltd. Kenya - 2010
Dimensions of the box: 27 x 27 x 5.4 cm
of the unfolded board: 49 x 50 cm
The game:
The main differences of this re-designed second edition (see the yellow
sticker on the lid) are:
 | There are now 5, partly new, sponsers for this new issue:
 | The whole 3rd station = Wilson Airport, incl. the Air Kenya
ad from 1st edition moved to the station space of the first side. |
 | Kenkom Bus Station became a Shopping Mall with an ad of the THB
Junction. |
 | Again no Free Parking on the 3rd corner but now with the ad
of Safaricom. |
 | The Kenya Railways space disappeared and was substituted by the Jomo
Kenyata International Airport, with an ad of
Kenya Airways, a competitor of Air Kenya consequently. |
 | The Airport space on the 4th side also became a Shopping
Mall, with an ad of ABC Place. |
|
 | At a close comparison of the map on the boards of the first and second
edition it can be seen that the latter is slightly
more zoomed out; see the A of KENYA. |
 | Harambee spaces now show a light green
exclamation mark. |
 | The
yellow question mark on the Bahati! spaces changed
color into a very light pink one. |
 | Water Company changed name into Maji Company. |
This all is reason to give a new list of all properties of the
new board:

From Endelea! Go! the properties are:

Authority - Wilson Airport (with ad of: Air Kenya) - Kasarani
